Default Paging "Mellow Yellow" > Jwis chain question

Well, this question is really for anyone with info about the Jwis chain. I know Mellow Yellow has been a suporter of the Jwis chain for awhile and is very knowledgeable about this part.

After reading numerous chain threads, I understand that Cloyes and CompCams both use the GM/Reynolds chain. Dont want that.

The Rollmaster and SLP double chain are NOT "plug and play". Needs shims/spacers, etc

So, that leaves the Jwis.

I dont need an adjustable timing set, so can I just use the factory GM cam/crank sprockets with the Jwis? Do you think I can re-use these sprockets (32,000 miles), or do I need to buy a new GM timing set? I guess you can't just buy the sprockets from GM. I guess they come as a set to include the factory chain?

Is the Jwis still about $100 from Cartek?

Thanks,
Ron

U make a good point.

I measured both the Stock and the Jwis chain. They are the EXACT same lengths.

I'm not sure whether the Cloyes is larger or the sprockets different from Stock. The sprockets would have to be about the same, eh? Else the chains wouldn't fit..

So, is the Cloyes a bit larger to take up more slack? We just put a new set on my new engine last weekend.. I did briefly hold the stock gear overlaid with the cloyes gear and they looked very very close to the same. My mech wanted the gears and it was 3am, so I didn't break out the tape measure..

But.. The stock gears won't break. Might be slightly smaller, but I'd bet that the gears are the same size or very close.

I think you'd be safe and smart just getting the Jwis. The adjustable timing can mess things up if someone doesn't set it up right too.

If anyone can compare the 2 gears and get the exact measurements, I'd appreciate!
I should be able to get this measured next weekend when another Cloyes comes in.

Also, FWIW, the $150-200 IRL chain is about .5" Longer than stock and the Jwis. The IRL is Super hvy duty, but dunno why they made it longer.. more slack..

Ya, $100 from Katech. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

the cam gear is definitely small on the factory set up...

Why don't you use a single row Rollmacter set....no shims....just plug and play....and no slack!!

Good point on the Cam gear. Will try to measure both gears when the new set comes in.

Where can one get the rollmaster and is it plug and play? No shims, etc required?

I am currently running the Jwis chain on the stock GM sprockets. I changed the chain at 50k. The sprockets didn't have any signs of wear so I kept them.

I have 400 miles on the new setup. Nothing has happend as of yet.

I was going to go with an adjustable set (had already purchased it an everything) but after talking to one of our many reputed sponsers I was informed otherwise.

This Rollmaster chain is a JWISS? I have been told that. If it's the same chain as the Katech JWISS one then I'd buy it for $90 as opposed to $116

Well pretty sure the cloyes/comp cam adjustable set and the stock gm use the same chain and it would be the same length but think the way the comp cams sprockets are designed their is a bit less slop..not sure though.I heard the comp cams/cloyes has stronger sprockets than stock..they seem heavier on the cam sprocket for sure..not sure about the construction of the bottom sprocket..I bought the jwis from cartech and dropped it on the cloyes/comp cams.I set the advance to zero on the cloyes/comp cams..I don't understand how that advance screw even works..I just put the bottom crankshaft sprocket on the keyway and lined the dot up to the exact same position as the stock crankshaft sprocket..I marked the crank so when I took off the stock crank sprocket I could exactly line things up..so I assume since the dot on the cloyes crank sprocket lined up same as stock and since I set the advance retard nut to zero that I am at zero..
the car seems to be running super...I just thought stronger sprockets would be a good thing and didn't want a same strength as stock chain.
the rollmaster sounds like a good deal or the
slp double roller..taking out the oil pump is annoying if you don't have an overhead hoist but it is doable without lifting the engine..just did it..
