Paging "Mellow Yellow" > Jwis chain question
After reading numerous chain threads, I understand that Cloyes and CompCams both use the GM/Reynolds chain. Dont want that.
The Rollmaster and SLP double chain are NOT "plug and play". Needs shims/spacers, etc
So, that leaves the Jwis.
I dont need an adjustable timing set, so can I just use the factory GM cam/crank sprockets with the Jwis? Do you think I can re-use these sprockets (32,000 miles), or do I need to buy a new GM timing set? I guess you can't just buy the sprockets from GM. I guess they come as a set to include the factory chain?
Is the Jwis still about $100 from Cartek?
Thanks,
Ron
I measured both the Stock and the Jwis chain. They are the EXACT same lengths.
I'm not sure whether the Cloyes is larger or the sprockets different from Stock. The sprockets would have to be about the same, eh? Else the chains wouldn't fit..
So, is the Cloyes a bit larger to take up more slack? We just put a new set on my new engine last weekend.. I did briefly hold the stock gear overlaid with the cloyes gear and they looked very very close to the same. My mech wanted the gears and it was 3am, so I didn't break out the tape measure..
But.. The stock gears won't break. Might be slightly smaller, but I'd bet that the gears are the same size or very close.
I think you'd be safe and smart just getting the Jwis. The adjustable timing can mess things up if someone doesn't set it up right too.
If anyone can compare the 2 gears and get the exact measurements, I'd appreciate!
I should be able to get this measured next weekend when another Cloyes comes in.
Ya, $100 from Katech. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Why don't you use a single row Rollmacter set....no shims....just plug and play....and no slack!!

I have 400 miles on the new setup. Nothing has happend as of yet.
I was going to go with an adjustable set (had already purchased it an everything) but after talking to one of our many reputed sponsers I was informed otherwise.
the car seems to be running super...I just thought stronger sprockets would be a good thing and didn't want a same strength as stock chain.
the rollmaster sounds like a good deal or the
slp double roller..taking out the oil pump is annoying if you don't have an overhead hoist but it is doable without lifting the engine..just did it..
