Default Nebie here, easy answers/questions

I am very new to the domestic scene and love the mustang, but cannot get away from the raw power of a z28/ss. Here is my understanding. The LT1 engine is found in the SS and is the same engine at the Vette. Now the z28 has the ls1? Please correct me if I am wrong. Anywhere I can see some articles on some easy bolt on's?

You're very wrong.

1992-1996 Corvette - mostly LT1s, with some 1996 manual tranny models getting the LT4

1993-1997 Z28 - LT1s
1996-1997 SS - LT1s with a very very very limited number of '97s getting LT4s

1997-current Corvettes - LS1 (ZO6 gets LS6)
1998-current Z28 and SS - both get LS1s.

The Corvette, SS, and Z28 LS1s are all pretty much the same, all making about 340-350 real crank hp. The power differences in the SS and Z28 from the factory are mainly due to different exhuast and intake tracts, something easily changeable in the aftermarket.

C5s have had different cam specs in the past, due to no Exhuast Gas Recirculation (EGR).

Anymore questions?

Intake - 2001 and newer LS1's come with the LS6 intake, which is an improvement over the LS1 intake. Also an aftermarket induction lid (Direct-Flo, Whisper, MTI, etc) is worth a consistent 10rwhp over stock. Various MAFs and MAF ends can get you more timing (i.e. power), but I'd expect to do some tuning.

Headers - Many choices. Boils down to what your objectives are. Three main categories - shorty, mid length, long tube. Shorties (Hooker, Edelbrock, JBA) are generally the easiest to install, cheapest, CARB legal, but also make the least power. Longtubes (FLP, Grotyohann, SLP, TTS, etc) will generally cost you the most, require new Y-pipe, catalytic convertors and such, while making the most power and torque. The midlengths (MAC, Bassani) seem to fall somewhere in between. Longtubes (esp. SLP) may give you ground clearance problems with a lowered car.

Exhaust - many catback choices out there including B&B, Random Tech, Mufflex, SLP, Flowmaster, etc. Probably depends most on the sound you like, whether you want stainless steel, and how much you want to spend. Some folks opt for a true dual exhaust, which likely has the most potential for power, but also requires much custom work.

Just doing a search for some of the brand names I've mentioned above or the three categories you listed should get you a great deal of good info.

Oh, if you're looking into the Mustangs it's much simpler. Just search for "blower" <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />

Take a peak at www.installuniversity.com and http://ls1.fbody.com/ for some good installation info.

Great job of summing it up Fulton.

I'll add to the exhuast, a lot of people just opt to install a ~30 dollar cutout. This allows them to have a quiet day to day car, and undo 3 bolts and have a wide open exhaust for the track. Proven power mod, about 30 bucks for the cutout and 20 or 30 to get it installed at most muffler shops I think.
