Default G5 cam dyno results

I finally headed out to the dyno after installing the G5 cam myself. The last dyno I had with my car netted 319 rwhp with 3.23 gears thru my unlocked Yank 4500.

Run #1 unlocked verter thru cutouts with 3.73 gears

331 rwhp 339 rwtq (he took it up to 6300 for some reason) A/F was at 11.5 with my stock MAF

Run #2 unlocked verter thru cutouts

341.3 rwhp 354.8 rwtq (I told him to take it to 6800 this time) A/F was at 13.0 switched to my fully ported MAF

I'm kind of dissappointed with my numbers. I only gained 22 hp with a cam. My peak HP was at 6800 and my shift point is set at 6500. O2s looked good and I also noticed that KR was at 4 deg and timing was at 22.5. Would that hurt my numbers? If so, what can I do to fix it?
Also, can I take it above 6800? It seems like I can make some power above 6800. Thanks.

Mods include FLP headers, ASP pulley, Lid, Yank 4500, FTRA, cutout, ED Wright tuning

Headers? Your numbers don't sound like you do...you'll gain much more with a set.

I take it that isn't with the custum tuning ? .. I would look into getting that done as well.

First of all, your timing is killing you. Thats enough knock to make you not even want to drive your car. You want to stay around 28-30 max timing. Also, long tubes will drastically help, as well as a set of heads. Lock the converter, get the timing up, and get some headers and you will be much happier.

That'll be $10, please!

If your peak HP is at 6800 you need to be shifting at probably 7200-7300. If you are shifting under or at your HP peak you are going to go slower than the hp numbers would lead you to believe.

A smaller cam shifted at the appropriate place would actually probably be faster!

that said, I wouldn't go over 7000 on a stock bottom end. You either need to add more cubic inches , throw the bottle on there, or set your shift points as high as you are comfortable with.

your peak is at 6800 because that big stall is unlocked. re-tune or buy a KO box...a little fine tuning should get you 0 knock and 27+ degrees timing. and LOCK the converter on the dyno, you cant get an accurate picture of the HP curve, nor see your actual HP without it.

The KR will definitely kill some power. FWIW, being that the car is an '01, you'll see somewhere around 26-26.5 degrees of timing w/ Ed's tuning. I have 26 degrees at WOT w/ his tuning and my cam, and I didn't get any KR. Ed said that he has yet to make more HP with more than 26 degrees of timing on the '01+ cars. No matter what, the 6,500 RPM shift points are definitely too low. My 224/224 112 LSA Comp XE-R peaked at 6,500. I had Ed set my shift points at 6,600, and they could definitely stand to be raised some. 6,800 RPM would be pretty ideal for my setup since it only drops ~6 RWHP from 6,500 to 6,800 RPM. These #'s are based off of my locked pull on the dyno. FWIW, my peak #'s still came in at 6,500 w/ the converter unlocked. The HP just doesn't drop off as much past the peak w/ it unlocked.
Do you know what your water temp was at on the runs? It's hard to figure out why you were getting so much KR. Sure, the box will alleviate the KR, but if you're experiencing real detonation you're not going to be any better off. I'd do some ATapping on the street or at the track to see if you still get the KR. If so, add some 104 unleaded, and see if it goes away. You have a decent amount of power to gain just by getting your timing where it needs to be. Don't forget that the 3.73's will typically show 6-8 RWHP less on the dyno as well.
Don't give up just yet. Once you have the small stuff ironed out the car will scream.

Thanks Trevor. Temps were normal, around 190 deg.
I also found out that I'm missing a bolt in the passenger side header and getting an exhaust leak. So I will get that fixed and try a higher octane gas and tune it up a bit and try to dyno again.

HI Loco,

We have not had any luck with the mixture as lean as 13:1 This cam likes 12.3 to 12.7 .

We also had some KR issues on a customers car when he got Ed Wright tuning. We switched his PCM out to our own tuning, and lifted the curve up with no KR. and a richer mixture. We just did a cam only on a 01 C5, and got 347 with stock exhause manifold and all 4 cats (pups and main cats).

give me a call if you cannot get it straightened out.

Thanks,

Lou Gigliotti
