I guess if you look on the bright tside of things, you can get a motor now that will actually put out the numbers you hope for and deserved, throwing all the money at that other dud of an engine.

Solid roller in the future....?

Damn!!! That hurts.. I feel you.. I am having a shortblock being built right now. Money seems to be the only thing I am good at making.. Engines are not my specialty. I should have left the car alone when it was running fine.. The bad thing is I cant stop. I am building the shortblock to take future forced induction, but this time I am playing it safe.. I am going to run safe boost until more reliable inventions come out to run more boost.. Staying below 600rwhp should be safe for a forged 346ci shortblock..

Can you plz give us details on Oil used, any past Oil Pressure issues, PCV changes?

Thx! Mine spun a rod bearing and put it thru the block on a stock Oil Pump failure.
Ohh.. Remember to clean out the intake. Had a BUNCH of metal & sludge up in there too..

Duuuuuuuude, you have the worst luck
Build your next setup right, and get a warranty with it Im sure your internal engine gremlins will go on strike if MTI has a 2 yr / 24K mile warranty on their motor

jmX: OH **** ! I totally forgot. Now we know exactly what happened. I was such an *IDIOT* to put Corey's springs on the car. Oh well. :-/

Vince: Bad timing for me...I was *trying* to start saving for a nice pad. Oh well.

Jason: Well, I dont think Ill do the 422 riiiight away, but Im definitely looking at an all-bore big ci motor. That way with a solid roller I can really spin it high. Im not totally sworn off solid rollers yet ;-)

MellowY: Mobile 1, Green label, I dont remember its actual weight/viscosity. Changed in the last 1000 miles. I dont know if the oil pressure did die though, although I would have thought it would set a "Check Guages" light or something. This motor has seen *alot* of 6000+ rpm recently.

TransZ: I'll be givin Jeff a call tomorrow ;-) MTI earned my business on this motor. Now I just have to wait, I suspect, as they are sorta backed up. Also, I dont know if they warantee a motor they dont install in the car. Im in Oregon now :-/

Now its covered in Simple Green.

AMazing where chunks of metal got. It really was like someone let a grenade off under the car. I remember my first thought being "The hood is OK..."

Hood was up when mine went. (Long story) and got to see the oil splash upwards & down. Not to mention a big puff of smoke!

I was real surprised nothing made it past the intake and into the air filter. It's a closed kinda donaldson one.. At least that was still clean.

FWIW, I debated the new Katech LS1 Rod Bolts on the new engine (not forged). But my mech was worried about the rods shifting and needing to be resized to be done properly, so he didn't want to do it and have a rod shift or be even slightly off..

Katech felt you could change them with just the caps off, but.. dunno...

Any chance the oil went a bit low? Y'all need bigger pans..

Default Stock bottom end ATE itself 8-/

I had just run a 12.023 @ 117 with a 1.90 60',
I so I figured out a few things and proceeded to run a nice 1.78 60'. I was well on my way to a nice 11 sec timeslip when part ways through 3rd, the rotating assembly tried very hard to leave the car. This is running NA (always have) and a 6700 rpm redline.

3 large holes in the engine and block, and the track cleanup guys actually handed me a rod bearing that was still hot.

http://www.nolke.com/syty/nextphase/crunch/

Lots of pics in there after I took the heads off.
Heads look recoverable, but nothing in the bottom end is worth more than scrap metal now. Even the Hammer Cam got chewed up

Im pretty sure it was a set of rod bolts that failed, and the rod took out several other rods, and they all together started to punch holes in things and fly out.
And NO, I didnt stay in it once I heard a noise ;-).

I'll be calling MTI about their super sweet motors Monday. :-/

That sucks Chris. All the time your car spent at MTI, they better have something to say about getting you a new motor...

We had put about 600 miles on it since it was at MTI.

The bottom end has 22k miles since it came new with the car.

Ive beat on this engine alot, so its not without cause, but Im surprised it let go *that* violently, that easily.

Yeah...Ive got some neat, very expensive paperweight. But thats racing ;-)

we might be able to find out when we take it apart and look at other bits.

Otherwise, I had no other signs. :-/

It was entirely stock. In fact, MTI spent a whole hell of alot of time fixing another vendors issues for hardly more than a song. Im going to talk to MTI about a bottom end because they are some of the only folks around that I can totally trust to not give me something that will have issues.

Visceral,
Sorry to see that happen man, I know it's gotta suck . Well , the silver lining is that there is bigger and better things to come for your program. BTW, what make exhaust valves were you running? they look quite different from what I use from Ferrea.
Better luck to you!
Joe.
