Default What else needed (including $) for 4xx ci motor?

I feel I already have most of the mods to go with it, which are listed below. Would I be able to re-use my ARE S2 Heads (2.08 valves)? How about my cam? I'm guessing I'd want to go with something a bit more aggressive given the CI, but it's probably not required right? Besides a fuel pump and new injectors, what other stuff would I need for a big CI motor (besides a 12-bolt!)? AND, given that I may just need the motor and a cam (no heads), what kind of $$ am I looking at for the motor (parts only)? FYI: vendors I am considering are ARE or MTI. Thanks.

I think a 422 shortblock with injectors/fuel pump is gonna come out around $8-10k. You should call ARE or MTI and ask. I beleive labor for install would be around $2k as well, and some places don't offer a full warranty unless they install it (however, they'll probably fix you up right if the shortblock is built poorly and its their fault).

I'll be doing the same as you...I just need the shortblock. I haven't looked at specific pricing in a while since I don't have the money to start with.

If you go with any company that is well known an markets their stuff, you will spend an *** load of money, but you get a good name, peace of mind, probably some kind of warranty and customer service, and other benefits I cant think of right now. If you build it yourself, you can save thousands, but you dont get any of the above benefits. Those are my thoughts about it. I personally look forward to building and installing my own big cube LS1. I even wrote an English process paper about it a few weeks ago in college. I dream about it... wow...cant wait...

I would seriously consider getting a short block opposed to stroking you current block. That seems to go over better than than stroking you stock block. The tricky thing about the LS1 type motors is that you have a aluminum block with steel sleves around the rotating assymblies. Thats one great thing about the old LT-1 blocks, the boring is much easier and stroker kits are half the price.

In short. If you have the money I would get a short block. I know http://www.racenet.net has
LT1 396 short blocks for around $5,000-$6,000. But I get the feeling a LS1 short block will be alot more pricy due to the increased difficulty that LT-1.

Honestly, you are already running 400 HP N/A at the rear wheels. A 382 or so should put you more towards 475+ N/A! Keep in mind the more you bore a engine the hotter it will run. So I'm just saying I would not go overboard on the cubic inches. But then again, I lean towards reliablity that a few more horses.

Cam might be a bit small.

You can reuse the heads if you have the big valves.

A built 422ci shortblock might run like $6-8K depending on the bore and stroke.

Thanks for all the info guys. I was definitely intending on buying a new shortblock, complete (minus heads) from ARE or MTI. I feel like I've got things covered on the intake and exhaust side (though maybe going to true duals might be worth a few ponies?), but am wanting to understand up front all the additional changes/upgrades I'd need to make.

John, I've got 2.08/1.65 valves on 5.3L S2 truck heads from ARE. Do you think they would transplant ok? Should the heads be re-worked to accommodate the new motor? I was definitely skeptical about my cam. It's plenty big for my current setup but I didn't know how it would fare with the larger CI's. Are most 4xx CI guys going with solid roller setups? What is the typical cam spec for these motors?

I think one of the things I'd really like out of the larger motor is a lot more torque down low. Obviously bigger cubes alone will do that, but I am not knowledgable in what kind of bore/stroke options there are and how the hp/tq curves would vary. Some feedback on bore/stroke vs. hp/tq would be great.

Please continue the feedback!

If you check out the search feature for the stroker, all-bore or big ci motors there is a ton of info.

The heads need to have the chamber opened up to match the new bore.

Well, one thing you would need to do is CC the heads to and see what compression you'll end up with when using various pistons.

I have an ARE 422ci iron block. I make like 430rwhp by 4800 rpms so I basically have no traction unless I am on a 28" slick.
