Even if you are using a dial bore and micrometer gauges to measure the clearance, I still like using a feeler gauge for piston to bore clearance as it's fast simple and fool proof.
Insert the piston upside down in the bore with a narrow feeler gauge lightly oiled placed along the checking point of the skirt, with no rings of course.
You should be able to insert your piston into the bore with a narrow .005" (not a .0025") gauge along the side of the piston skirt and remove the gauge from the piston/bore with a "moderate" amount of drag if you have the proper .005" clearance you need.
Good thing you didn't go ahead and try and fire it up, it would have cost you a lot more than new rings <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

y2k,

That is one problem with using 2 different instruments to measure for clearance. Unless they are both calibrated on the same fixture.

Sorry man. I'm glad you caught it in time!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I think it was more operator error <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Going by zero on the bore gauge when i should have been going from 1, there's my .010" difference.

wasn't until i put the calipers on the bore gauge that my screw up became apperent

I'm just pissed at myself for not going w/ my gut that something was not right. I know better, but the numbers seemed right at the time.

Live and learn <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Now i just gotta get the block over to Katech and raise holy hell about it <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />
