How much oil does a 01 f body take?
My trans am is burning too much oil for my liking and the local dealership said that the dipstick is wrong and i am puting too much oil (6 Qts)in it and thats why its burning too much oil. They said that there is only supossed to put in 5 qts. I think thats BS because the owners manual says 5.5 and the dipstick doesnt read full until 6 quarts. Can anyone help me out.

In most other cars yes, it's better to be slightly underfull than it is to be overfull, but GM engineers (and those that know the LS1's dimensions well) have confirmed that it is totally safe to run as much as 7 quarts of oil in the LS1 f-bodies, even with a stock pan. If you autocross and you run less than 6, you are taking a chance of oil starvation in the corners.

My '01 with 6 qts. and stock PF44 filter shows just barely above the "full" line on the dipstick. When I had my '99, it would take 5 3/4 to show the same level. I wonder if they changed the dipstick at some point?

These cars handle well enough that a sustained "Weeee" run on a 270* onramp could dry out a few mains! Not a situation I'd care to experience. I use the larger GM filters and a complete 6 quart Royal Purple oil change.
I just sleep better that way. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
