Looking to dump $10K into my LS1...What tuner ? MMS?
Hi Guys , i am new to this forum . I recently purcahsed a 2002 Vette and i have about $10 K that i want to spend on getting it modified.
I live in Orange County and am new to the area , any suggestions on what Tuner i should use ? I am leaning towards MMS. Are they a reputable tuner? Do they stand behind there work ?
I'm looking for excellent performance while not sacrificing the reliablity.
Has anybody here had a bad experience with MMS? Any suggestions on what other forums are good to research ?
Thanks !!!!
Tony

You could research on LS1.com too, they just don't have as many tech type people
As for which tuner to give 10k to, well... I've never had that much scratch to throw into my engine. I've heard good and bad about MMS, but I've heard good and bad about almost all the others too. It's just a matter of who gives you the best service. I've always bought from Thunder, but well, never dropped 10k on them though. Good luck

There are a couple guys who have not been happy with MMS, but that is the case with all shops. The vast majority of their customers are very satisfied, myself included. I run 10's with their heads/cam package with a stock short block. They deliver cutting edge parts and performance for a great price.

Mike Morgan (MMS) is VERY VERY knowledgeable on these cars. He wont hesitate to spend an hour or so, on the phone, helping you tune, troubleshoot or just plain talk to you about your car.

With 6K try LS1 Motorsports and talk to Rob Raymer. He can get you into a single turbo soon enough that'll smoke the hides with 570rwhp/700rwtq with a stock motor. The other $4k will have to go to trick wheels or something...

Give MTI a call down here in texas. Or maybe ARE. Both shops stand behind there work and have had great results on the track.

What kinda setup are you looking for? NA? Juice? Blower? 10k can go a long way, or you might need to double that to do it right. Just depends on what you want.

I am leaning towards a stroker motor if i can swing that for $10K . If a stroker is to expensive then i will go with an aggressive cam , heads and some other bolt ons .IE: Underpulley ,LS06 intake,Headers ,Blackwing etc

10k is probably not enough because you need to remember you have to add on headers, pulley, tb, and lots of little bolt on things. Are you M6 or A4? How fast do you want to go?

Give MTI a call about their 393 All-Bore setup.
With a set of LS6 Heads and a nice cam, you'll be seeing 500rwhp. The rest of your money can go into full exhaust, Intake, Tires, etc.

Re: Looking to dump $10K into my LS1...What tuner ? MMS?
Not an MMS fan myself but nothing against them. All I've had is a ported throttlebody from them and it was fine. I have seen their products though and personally would go to either ARE, MTI or someone that most people leave out(Thunder Racing). They are sucessfully building nice complete engine packages. All the way from forged 346 ci engines up to 400+ cubic inches. Give Paul, David, and Geoff at Thunder a call and they can set you up. I've personally dealt with Nick Agostino a lot and he built my last motor. If I had it to do again it would be a hard toss up. I'm pretty happy with all the people I named.

I'll throw in my $.02 here...
If possible, find someone local to you. If that's not an option, then find someone somewhat closeby. It's no fun trying to deal with issues with someone thousands of miles away...
Other than that, talk to prospective shops on the phone and find someone you feel comfortable giving your money to...

I agree George , thats why i am looking at MMS.I'm realising that there are not alot of choices in the southern california area.
There is a shop in San Diego called JBA, but i think they only work on Mustangs.

Go to www.corvetteforum.com and ask around. You'll find some posts similar to this:

And there are more people than that one.

Another concern is the size of a shop. The larger shops will have a vast wealth of experience and resources to draw on. They also design and manufacture their own parts, which means lower prices and higher quality. Some shops might look big online with their loud supporters, but in reality are just one bay fly by night garages that resell others parts with their own name on them. Be sure to take a tour of any shop before you buy.
Also its really important to figure out what your end goal (track times, rwhp, streetability, smog legal, etc) are as soon as possible. That will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Whatever work you do, make sure you leave $$ for suspension, 12 bolt or 9" rear end, and possibly a new tranny. People start putting all this stuff on and don't bother with suspension for insance and wonder why they can't hook. Then they do suspension and hook, but break their rear end. Once they replace the rear with a stronger one and are running consistent 10s, their tranny goes.
Just be smar and do it ALL at once.
Engine work, suspension, tranny, rear. You should come out at about 10k with that.
