Default 382 engines... a few questions

I have a 382 and was curious how others had theirs setup (mainly heads/cam) and the results they have...

I have a stroker making a dissapointing 435 rwhp 429 rwtq although I don't think I'm too far off from good numbers.

engine mods:
Custom Scat Crank
Oliver Rods
J&E Flat top pistons
2.02/1.60 valves, Stage III heads
Comp Cam 224/224 114lsa .539
Volant Air Intake
Holley/Lingenfelter Intake (not ported)
BBK TB
MAF Ends
Dynatech LT's
3" y-pipe w/cutout

I'm looking to do a new Cam/head setup and am looking for advice and power output of fellow 382 engines...

I'd suggest bigger valves if you redo the heads, probably 2.08 intake valves. For a cam, depends on what you're looking for (daily driver, idle quality, drag racer, etc).

Probably from 228-234 at .050, maybe more depending on what you wish to accomplish.

Do you have an A4 or M6?

I have an M6 and it is a daily driver that I drag race quite often.

I've been told on a 382 stroker 2.02/1.60 is about the right size valves and not to go bigger, by a very respectable source... Personally I thought this was a little small.

I would like an aggressive idle. I'm not looking to sound "stock" by any means

For what its worth, stock valves are 2.00/1.55, almost all heads/cam 346 cars are running 2.02s or greater.

Nine Ball (a site administrator here) has/had a 382, and ran a MTI/Lunati 232/232, 0.574/0.574" 112 LSA cam in his daily driver, and was fairly happy with the track results as well ( I guess he was happy that his 6 speed, 3600 lbs daily driver went 11.08@123.5)

hey john! hope you get that combo together. MTI has the "T2" cam the nine ball had in his car, only difference being he had larger valves due to the large bore motor. yours is stock bore. good luck this year!

I'm assuming this has been dyno tuned with a wide-band sensor? Also that cam is a little small. For a given set of heads/cam a stroker will make no more peak hp than a stock displacement motor, but you can run a larger cam and have better idle quality and have a lot more low end torque.

this has NOT been dyno tuned. It had a wideband run on it over a year ago but since then I've put on better headers, !cats, 3" y-pipe, H/L intake, and a few other things.

I know my cam is pretty damn small. I'm looking for suggestions on a new heads cam setup.
I think I'm leaning toward MTI's R1 with their stage II heads....

Who ported the heads and do you have any flow numbers?

I think the 2.02/1.60 valves are fine for the stock bore. I wouldn't go any bigger unless I was running a 4.00"+ bore.

As for the cam, would try something in the low 230 range/ 112lsa. Preferably one of the newer Comp extreme lobes.

Your number are a little low, but nothing to worry about. A cam change and some tuning will pick you up quite a bit.

Jason

I know I'm gonna look like an idiot here but I don't have any flow numbers for the heads...

A local shop, excessive motorsports, ported the heads by hand. What they called a Stage III race setup. I know they were impressed with the flow numbers, but I don't have them and have no way to get them...btw avoid that place like the plague.

In my opinion I think the stage 3 ls6 heads with 2.08 and 1.60 valves would be a good choice and a cam like the T2 or R1 would make awesome power with your set up.

Get a new cam with a lot more lift and 224+ duration and some tuning.

"Excessive Motorsports"

Well, that in and of itself could be the source of your problems. However, I agree with everyone else. If you can take a cam with a rough idle get a 230+/230+ with a .570+ lift (that is if the heads have double springs, which they should if they are stage III). Then go to a GOOD shop to have it dyno tuned via LS1-edit.

If that doesn't bring your numbers up to where you want, you may want to have someone pull the heads off and see what's really going on there. Excessive is a REALLY shady place, and I would question anything that goes outta there.

G'luck with your setup.

Oh, and ditch that Volant for a normal lid/FTRA kit. The Volant is pretty, but other lids flow better.

I think the 2.08" intake valves that Jimmy mentioned are too large for a stock bore. The absolute largest I would want would be 2.055". The 224/224 is definitely a small cam for the cid you're running. I'd look into pulling the heads off and sending them to a quality shop like GTP, MTI, etc. to have them flowed, touched up, etc. Who knows what springs they installed, how the port work is, etc. The heads will make or break a setup. I'd start with a cam swap and see how that goes. If you go with a 230+ duration cam, I'd venture to guess that you could pick up another 15-20 RWHP. I picked up 17 peak RWHP on my '98 T/A 383 going from a 221/221 cam to MTI's 232/237 "R1".

latest update:

I had the stroker dyno tuned by Raging Motorsports and went up to 448 rwhp and 439rwtq.

I'm pretty happy with that for now but still plan on a new cam and heads. At the moment, my big dollars have to go to sort out my drivetrain issues. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

That's an interesting post on the Volant intake. I may try swapping it out and see what happens.
I also got an LS6 intake to see how that does. It'll be on tonight and dyno'd soon. Anybody else done a straight comparison between the H/L intake and the LS6???

Thanks for all the info, I'll keep you guys updated.

I wouldnt change your heads, you have a great combo there. (those are great numbers for a stroker 382)

The only thing I Would look at changing is the cam (What are your old cam specs?)

If anything I would throw in another cam. 234/230 112LSA XE-R based cam would work great and idle well. Check P to V clearance and get another LS1 edit tune.
Cheers,
Chris
