i was told thats optimal for a street car with no flycutting. anythig over a 230 seem like it might be kinda big for street use. this is my only car and i need it every day, i can't be changing springs after every 3 oil changes, or have serious drivability problems.

i am willing to run any spring that doesn't require machiening. but i don't want a huge cam because there are no tuners within like a 200 mile radius so i will probably get hptuners and try and tune it myself.

You can go to a repository and download a base tune for your setup or something close. That would make tuning it easier.

Assuming he's not going with a 90/90 do you fellas think the tr230 would be a good cam? It seems to make damn near 400 to the wheels on most cam only apps and has one hell of a power curve.

I think it will be great with the ls6 intake. I would buy it again for a cam only build.

Get the Patriot Extreme Springs and get a 227°/231° LSK cam with 110° LSA +2° (108° ICL) .

LSK lobes probably do shorten spring life. They're so new that I don't think anyone has had them long enough to make this common knowledge.

As for street manners, you're asking about all small-medium cams. They'll be fine.

I see all kinds of people loving their Futral cams. Even their smaller sized cams make great power.

And I believe you'll learn to tune really quickly when you have to. It's not a mystery. You'll just find a similar tune, put it on, then go from there. I'm sure you'll read more and try more once you HAVE to so the car will be right. Should be a great experience. If I wasn't too cheap, I'd buy a wideband and HPTuners or EFILive right now. But I'm too cheap.

If you don't want the possible short spring life, get XE-R lobes 226° and 230°. Change my previous quote of LSK with 110° + 2° to 109° +2°. If you go with the XE-R use 110° + 2° for the same IVC and EVO event:

0.006 0.050 0.200
Intake Duration - ID 277 227 153 LSK
Exhaust Duration - ED 281 231 156 LSK
Lobe Center Angle - LCA 109 109 109
Intake Centerline - ICL 107 107 107

Intake Valve opens - IVO 31.5 6.5 -30.5 BTDC (- indicates ATDC)
Intake Valve closes - IVC 65.5 40.5 3.5 ABDC
Exhaust Valve Opens - EVO 71.5 46.5 9 BBDC
Exhaust Valve Closes - EVC 29.5 4.5 -33 ATDC (- indicates BTDC)
Exhaust Centerline - ECL 111 111 111
Overlap 61 11 -63.5 degrees

0.006 0.050 0.200

Intake Duration - ID 275 226 147 XE-R
Exhaust Duration - ED 279 230 151 XE-R
Lobe Center Angle - LCA 110 110 110
Intake Centerline - ICL 108 108 108

Intake Valve opens - IVO 29.5 5 -34.5 BTDC (- indicates ATDC)
Intake Valve closes - IVC 65.5 41 1.5 ABDC
Exhaust Valve Opens - EVO 71.5 47 7.5 BBDC
Exhaust Valve Closes - EVC 27.5 3 -36.5 ATDC (- indicates BTDC)
Exhaust Centerline - ECL 112 112 112

It gets a little easier to understand when you get down to the nitty gritty and look at just the .050" numbers. Code Tags help with alignment as well.
Code:
Intake Duration: 227 @ .050" LSK Lobe
Exhaust Duration: 231 @ .050" LSK Lobe
Lobe Center Angle: 109
Intake Centerline: 107

Intake Valve opens: 6.5 Before Top Dead Center (- indicates ATDC)
Intake Valve closes: 40.5 After Bottom Dead Center
Exhaust Valve Opens: 46.5 Before Bottom Dead Center
Exhaust Valve Closes: 4.5 After Top Dead Center (- indicates BTDC)
Exhaust Centerline: 111
Overlap 11 degrees

Intake Duration: 226 @ .050" XE-R Lobe
Exhaust Duration: 230 @ .050" XE-R Lobe
Lobe Center Angle: 110
Intake Centerline: 108

Intake Valve opens: 5 Before Top Dead Center (- indicates ATDC)
Intake Valve closes: 41 After Bottom Dead Center
Exhaust Valve Opens: 47 Before Bottom Dead Center
Exhaust Valve Closes: 3 After Top Dead Center (- indicates BTDC)
Exhaust Centerline: 112
Overlap 8 degrees
Aside from that, the LSK cam is ever so slightly larger and on a one degree tighter Lobe Separation Angle, so it has 3 degrees more overlap. In real worlkd terms, both cams should feel and run nearly identical to the untrained, with the LSK idling slightly rougher but making about 10hp more at peak, mostly due to the additional lift.

Yes, they should both run very similar. If he doesn't want to deal with the extra lift the XE-R is a great way to go.
p.s. I have no idea what the hell code tags are .
