keep in mind that your oil pump is now trying to eat what used to be your thrust bearing in the bottom of the pan.

?, have never seen anything bigger than sludge on the drain plug after oil change....i guess some of it might be floating around in there....but i'm bettin it's been a gradual process...still tryin to figure out how/why...any ideas ?

every time you let the clutch out it pushes the crankshaft to the front of the block. sometimes harder than others...

thats a good question. youd be guessing of course on the clearance, unless you used plastigage or something. it would be a bitch but you might be able to do it... retaining your sanity while laying under the car with a tiny screwdriver "picking" at a thrust bearing might be a tall order tho.
could you blame it on GM somehow? 40K miles aint much... hell you should see the stuff toyota is warrantying these days. dont change your oil for 70K miles and we will rebuild it for free!!!

Then how come there have not been more incidences with these bearings wearing out?

what do you mean exactly by "more incidences". is this the only recorded LSx thrust bearing failure in history? (damn your luck, orange ss! )

damn, i would say .035 is very excessive...honesly though, if it were my car, i would drive it until it breaks.. Thats all i can afford to do lol. Seriously, if it drives fine, dont worry about it until if gives you a problem, or untill there is a noticable amount of metal/**** in the oil/on the drain plug. Thats just what i would do, probably not what you should do though...
