Default Since I've got to take the heads in anyway, What about Porting?

Well, I'm sure most of you know of my mishaps with the T1 cam install. Long story short I have bent all the exhaust valves and am taking the heads in to a local shop. The have told me they can do a nice street port/polish job for an additional $500-$600. So I'm looking at about $800 for them to replace the bent valves and all that jazz, as well as the p/p.

My question is this. What should I ask for specifically? Anything I should tell him. Given my the T1 cam specs does he need to know anything before I drop them off that might improve the efficiency of the heads in my application? Will ported heads (even if the are just lightly) make any decent improvements w the T1?

I had been following your original thread, but missed that you discovered all of the exhaust valves being bent. Sorry to hear about that.

As far as porting the heads, you may want to be wary of someone unfamiliar with LS1 heads. It's possible that they could do more harm than good. If they're just planning some simple clean up work in the bowls and maybe a valve job, I'd say you'll be fine. If someone starts going crazy in there, you could have trouble though...

JMHO...

I got 17 pair of heads worth of exhaust valves. Just post an address where I can send them and they're yours free. All valves are cleaned and faced (45º). Dono if I've got any 2.00" intakes though. I'll check in the morning.
After what you've been through I wish I could do more for ya pal.

Sorry to hear about your problems. If you are short on cash, why don't you buy a set of used heads? Someone was selling a complete set of '99's for $250. I'm sure there are other out there. Then, you could keep your heads for a core on ported ones, or build them up as $$ permit. Just a suggestion.

Is this shop experienced with doing LS1 heads?

I would call an experienced shop like ARE, MTI, TR, JPR, Cartek or any of the sponsors listed to the right.
Get a set of Stage 1 heads with 11:1 compression and a decent port job. Should cost about the same as what you are going to pay and you will get known and proven results.

I'm with 11 Bravo and Chris ARE 360 on this one.
Either go the cheap-n-replace route, of if you are going to spend the money... have it done RIGHT!

Good luck!

I see you are in OH.

Are you near Nu-Tek aka Nick Norris? He's a solid one.

Sorry to hear about your mishap.

Here is a little info that may help you from my experience.

I bent one valve due to a broken spring. I was working on home ported 6.0 heads at the time so I went ahead an pulled my stock 5.7 heads since I was sure one valve was bent.

I finished up porting the 6.0's (probably similar to Stage I).

I had the machine shop order Ferrea 2.02/1.55 valves.
Had the heads milled 0.30 which resulted in a 63.5 cc chamber w/ the Ferrea valves.
Intake ports measured 214cc vs. 200cc (stock 5.7) vs. 210cc (stock 6.0).

Standard 3 angle valve job by the machine shop.

For parts and machine work I spent about $900 not including the heads ($300 for 6.0's) subtract $250 for selling my 5.7 heads.

I picked up 21 rwhp. I probably would have picked up more if I had had an LS1 shop to the valve job.

If I had to do it again, I probably would have stayed with stock vavles and had TEA do the machine work or atleast the valve work.

Check out installuniversity webpage. They have a write up on TEA budget heads using stock valves.

Also FYI, I picked up 30 rwhp with just the T1 cam change.

Hope this helps some. Just trying to get you the most hp for your money.

There was also a write up by TEA at the Fordmall discussing how important the proper valve seat angles are.

The shop had good references from the local F-Body club, and said they have worked with LS1's before. I'm not exactly sure what I asked him for, something to the effect of 'put it back together and make it worth the trouble of me having to pull them'.

He said he was going to do a mult-angle valve job, work on the bowls a bit and flat mill it around 15-20 or so. He mentioned some other things, but I don't recall them at the moment. He didn't recommend the larger valve sizes for the money. He was pretty insistant that with all the R & D that went into the LS1 heads, that they are a very superior head to start with. It wasn't worth the money to airflow increase for the small size change in the valves.

With the little bit described above, do you think I can find at least 10 more horses with my came rather than with my old untouched stock heads? I'm really hoping for an eye open with the new T1 cam and 'touched' heads. I just hope it runs fine in my A4 after I tweak it with LS1EDIT.
