Default Need some help on this cam....

Alright, I plan on getting a cam within the next couple months and I have a few questions. It's been narrowed down to two I think, I'm open to more options. I will be ditching the cats and may even go true dual before this is done for the exhaust side. Cam #1 the ASA cam. 226/236 .525/.525 110LSA. A couple guys I know have this cam. One is putting out 395 to the wheels with just SLP headers, no lid or anything else. Another is putting out 405rwhp/400rwtq with some bolt ons and SLPs. The peak power comes at around 6400. This cam sounds absolutly amazing and is the sound I'm looking for from a cam. I was told it will need programming and just drilling the throttle body doesn't quite do it. I'd like some opinions on that. I like the lift on this cam because it's low and not very stressful to the springs. And I don't want to hear it doesn't have enough lift because look at the numbers on the other cars.

Cam #2 the TR 230/224 cam. I like the numbers I've seen from this cam, and the few posts of the sound are pretty good but not up to ASA standards. The power band seems fine, what does it peak at? I'd like something preferably peaks around 6200.

I'm basically looking for a lot more power and a nasty nasty lope. If I have to get programming fine, but if I don't thats a plus. I would like to hit 380rwhp+ and I would really enjoy an equal torque number like the ASA numbers. So any suggestions? TIA

Sounds about like ya gotcher mind made up anyways.

Why not try something custom? The 981's or Comp Double Springs can handle more lift. No prob. Howsabout the ASA cam's durations and lumpy 110LSA w/ lift #'s of .570?

Howsabout the ASA cam w/ 1.8 rockers? Now, that would be wild.

BTW, none of this is gonna mean a thing w/out *at least* 2.02 heads. And, probably bigger. You already got the Grots, butcha need the LS6 intake and the heads to feed that big of a cam.

I agree.. If you like rough idle then go ASA.. The 1.85's from SLP would be better.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

SSinful- Well the numbers I mentioned above were with stock heads, and stock valves. Actually check that, their heads have been milled slightly and the one putting 405 to the wheels has slight touch up hand porting. If they can do that on just the .525 lift and nearly stock heads, then I don't see the need to go to bigger valves quite yet. On the springs you were mentioning don't you mean 918 instead of 981? Also, I know I can run the normal ASA cam with programming on stock heads, and the power peaks around 6400, if I up the lift to say ohhh, .570 or so on a custom cam will that raise the peak power rpm? Also, how else is it going to change the drivability of the car?

SSinful and Vince- no rocker arms for me, waaaaaay too expensive, if I wanted to do that I'd just go the custom cam route.

thebadbat- What do you want to know? I can answer some of your questions, and I'm sure some of the other guys will be able to jump in and answer what I can't.

Thanks again for the help guys, Keep the opinions rolling!!

Jason,

Whatever you know, lay it on me! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />
Also, who makes this cam, and where/who can you purchase it from? Thanks!

Alright, well as you can see the cam specs and some hard dyno numbers are in my first post. Power peaks around 6400. The cam provides loads and loads of mid range torque. This is also one of the rare cams that provides near equal torque and horsepower numbers which I personally like. I don't like dynos where I see 400rwhp and 375rwtq. I'd much rather have something like 385/385. The cam from what I've been told WILL require programming though I'm waiting for more opinions on that. A simple drilling of the t-body or setting the idle screw will not work on this one. The cam is available at any local GM dealer. This is a GM part. LS6 springs are fine to use with this as it only has a .525 lift. I know one guy has put some very very hard miles on this cam with the LS6 springs and they are fine. You might want to go with the 918 just for the added strength. I'm also still looking for opinions on what would happen if the lift was increased to say .570 all the way around, but no response yet. The cam lopes like no other I've ever heard. I believe if you do a search for Chris Johnson his cam comes the closest. It truly does sound like an old muscle car. So what else do you want to know??

So, could I get away with running this cam with some MMS stage 2 heads (milled .030) without having P to V clearance issues?

Thanks! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I'm not sure. One guy has his milled .045 and he had his pistons fly-cut so I'm not sure.....
