Default oil pump and timing chain

I am bout to do a cam install on a 98 TA with 86k mi on the clock. Do i need to put a new timing chain and oil pump. I really don't want to. Any one ever had one to fail? I am going to change lifters and pushrods for sure. Just want to get all parts before i start.

well it would be a good idea, but not a necessity. As far as the lifters go, the stock ones are fine. Btw you have pull the heads to change the lifters.

I agree. No need to change lifters. That would just add a lot of cost and time to the swap.

FWIW I changed my cam in my 97 vette when it had 75k on the clock and left the oil pump alone. It now has over 100k and from what I last heard from the current owner still runs like a champ

I have a noise in there somewhere. Unless its a bent pushrod. I'll see when it comes apart.

Id change the oil pump to an LS6 pump. 2001 and older pumps fail.....Mine did. The pump only cost 75 bucks. The timing chain from GM is also cheap, I changed the chain only so I didnt have to pull the gear on the crank, which looked fine anyways. Lifters are usually mint.

Is it just the LS1 timing chain that is weak? I always hear of people "upgrading" to an LS2 chain. Is that one better?

Good question. Is the LS2 chain compatible with the LS1 or LS6 setups?

With your application I would get an LS2 chain, which is a direct replacement, and at least upgrade to a new LS6 pump if you don't want to go with a ported one.

Yes, the LS2 chain is a direct replacement for the LS1 chain, it's just beefier, here's a pic.

I don't really like the idea of putting a new chain on old sproketts. What about the noise from LS2 chain i've heard about? Is it really noticable? Where to get one, SDPC?

Quite a difference. Much beefier is the LS2. Okay, now I gotta keep my eye out for an LS2 timing chain setup. Thanks for the pics.

Numerous people have done so with good results.

I have never heard of this "noise" that your referring to.

I got mine from Thunder Racing.

Good to know. I am wanting to put an LS1 in my vette. I am just gathering info for when the time comes. Seems like I saw one in the for sale section the other day for a very reasonable price.
