My 98 ws6 has a lid and cut-out, otherwise it's stock. Would a aftermarket cam be worthwhile? Car is a auto(no high stall conv) and 3.23 rear. Has to be legal for Cali. thx Eric

For now, no a cam would not be worth your while. There are several building blocks you need to stack up which accomodate a cam. Right now you have none of them. Cams require at least the minimal of a good flowing exhaust setup(headers, catback, etc..), and the Ls6 intake for 90% of max power. You have none of these..
You still have a TON of mods left to do, which will easily give you 20-30 more HP. Start small, and work your way up. Thats the only true way to make combo's work. With a set of headers and convertor alone, you could easily drop the ET's by .8 or more. Headers, pulley, verter, and some free mods would definately be the first place to start.
BTW, love the screen name <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I thought some cams were designed to work with stock exhaust manifolds, like the Hot Cam? Wasn't that designed for showroom stock raceing were they had to run stock exhaust manifolds with virtually no exhaust after that? Or even the 02 Zo6 cam with 550 lift? Those guys are getting 360 RWHP with stock exhaust manifolds!
Also I think a cam swap would be a great bang for the buck mod in a otherwise stock Ls-1. Say you installed the 01 Z06 cam with the 525 lift. Youd probably pick up 15-20RWHP for $250 Bucks! And No idle issues or torqe converter requirements. Heck since it's a GM part youd probably keep your warranty!

I did this, but I quickly followed with other mods. Still waiting to get the converter installed. I had a K&N and a Flowmaster muffler only at the time of the cam install. I had the car dynoed before and after, keep in mind the C2 is 224/224 .581/.581 112LS. Before, I had 290.1HP and 312.5TQ After cam I had 295.5HP and 304.4TQ on MTI's dyno.
The guys at MTI said the car was gonna idle like crap, drive like crap, but to tell you the truth, it wasn't that bad. I have never had a car with an aftermarket cam before and had only done a little research on LS1's before I decided on the C2, basically because that is what Raughammer is using. If I could go back I'd probably go with the X1 cam since I'll be going bigger later anyway, but hindsight is 20/20.

Thanks for the input! Yea the converter was an idea. More I thought about it, cam without headers is kinda backwards. Thx Eric P.s 98 was the only name that poped in my head...
