Default 226 XE or XE-R

I plan on getting one of these two cams 226 XE w/570 lift or the 226 XE-R w/585. When the came goes in it will be with Hooker lontubes and ORP and a cutout.I will be running stock heads at first but plan on going w/ stage 2 heads when the money is available. My questions are will this came work with stock heads?(plan on using 918's and titanium retainers and hardened pushrods)Also how much more power would the XE-R give me than the XE if any? My only other mod is a PT4000 w/ 3.42 gears. Any help on this would be great.

Thanks Paul

Would the XE-R 228/228 be to much cam for a stock engine? At what rpm would the 228 w/ a 112lsa peak horsepower be at compared to the 226 w/ a 112lsa ? And what kind of power would it have w/ stock heads? Once again thanks for all the opinions and suggestions!!

Thanks Paul

With My 224 Cam, i shift at 6550 or so. I would imagine that 228 cam on the 112 would have to be shifted atleast 6700 RPM's. If your worried about shifting the Car too high, then i'd stick with the 226

First I would like to say you are heading in the right direction with your build up because you bought a bad as$ stall converter before the cam.Now I will say get something else besides the cam because you wont benefit from it that much because your car cant breath.I would go with a full exhaust system headers all the way back and then I would put a cam in the car.If not then I would go with the xer grind on a 227/227 dur .599/.599 lift 111lsa oh wait thats my cam. Being honest whatever you get just get it on a xer grind.

I run a 226/226 575/575 114 Futral Motorsports cam. Its not an XE-r lobe, but its an agressive one nonetheless, and is getting the job done quite well

I think how high you want to rev your car should be of concern. My car woke up when I switched from 3.42's (stock motor set up)to 4.10's (cam only set up), and I imagine 3.73's would be a happy medium. With these "bigger" single pattern cams (especially the 228) you will need to rev higher and higher to take full advantage of them.
Just FYI: I rev to about 6500-6600 rpms with my stock heads and 226 cam, but plan on trying a couple of hundred rpms higher soon.
I know TrevorD shifts at 6800 in his comp 224 XE-r stock headed car.

I think a 226 cam will be a good performing cam for you. Plenty of people have gone fast with that #, from georgeC to ChrisM to me! Granted these were different versions of the 226 cam, but its the same manufacturer refining their cam.
You could say that the cam will work very well with aftermarket heads because both GeorgeC and ChrisM run stage2 heads and have been in the 10's.

Also on springs: I've yet to have a problem with my comp 26918/stock retainer set-up, which is a big plus. You need to watch your lift and total duration #'s to stay away from the thresh-hold of these springs.
I wouldnt go with the 227 599 ALonzo spoke of for specificly this reason.

Also: the lower lobe # will bring your peak power/power band into a lower rpm range, so in order to make your 3.42's work you might consider that 112 lobe seperation, I'm just curious as to how it will idle.

Good Luck!

That is true to a point but I have seen the XE-R 230/230 112LSA cam peak around 6400rpm.
Strange but true. that was also with ported heads however.
