Default Anyone who has ever broken a timing chain, come inside!!!!!!!

Please help me and a friend out....

His car stalled on him last night, and is making a clattering noise, and now it wont fire up... There was no codes thrown, but the dash is going haywire when trying to start the car.... after he tries to start it, when he takes the keys out, the speedo and rpm guages, as well as others, shoot up really high then go back down....

We think it may be the timing chain...

So, what happened when your timing chain failed? Also, what damage did it cause? Thanks. What, if any sounds did it make?

TIA,

TJ

If you've snapped a t/c, you'd run a very real risk of bending or breaking valves when they hit the pistons...which also means you could trash those pistons...my buddy threw one on his 95 Vette at 4500RPM
9 bent valves, dinged the **** outta 5 pistons, and got T/C bits all over
It's a very bad thing.
If you suspect it, DON'T keep trying to start the car--you'll only do more damage--since the crank and cam aren't synchronized anymore...

oh yeah-- he also blew a ring out of one piston--which he didn't discover until we put her all back together <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" /> meaning the whole bottom end has to come out... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[guns]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_guns.gif" />

Not to get your hopes up but I had a similar problem recently and it turned out to be the ground that goes to the back of the drivers side head. My car did exactly what you describe, hope thats all it is. Good luck.

Car will crank and crank and crank. Like it's out of gas.

Take off the oil fill cap. If you don't see the rockers moving as the engine cranks then it's only firing on only one cylinder ie. broken timing chain.

Sounds like your buddy has a different problem.

Having been through 2 timing chain breakages, I'm here to tell ya: The engine WILL NOT crank over AT ALL if you have a broken T-chain. Waaaay too many sensors in the LS1 saying "No way, Jose!"

There is no clattering w/ a broken T-chain in a LS1. Just kind of a "whump" and that's it. The top end (obviously) stops IMMEDIATELY. The bottom end stops right after. Right after pounding at least 1/2 yer valves back up into the seats.

Believe me, if you broke a T-chain, there's a BIG SES going on.

Sounds a lot more like a broken valve spring. Lots of clattering, and then because of a severe misfire code, the engine won't turn over. But, you have *no codes*??!? Bizarre. Should have a SES for what you say is going on. Either a big SES or "Check gages" light.

If when you turn the key and the starter goes and all you hear is a fast spinning WHIRRRRRRRR noise, then you've broken the timing chain.

If it's the chain, most of the valves will be bent with marks on the pistons.

I just did this last friday. If its timing chain you will zero compression and all you will here is the starter whirring away. I snapped mine at WOT so I am unsure the extent of the damage. I havent opened it up yet other than checking compression. Things are moving in there but I am 100% I bent all the valves and kissed the pistons.
Whos knows what else. To the vets on here that have had this happen. What pistons and such should I get for a stock cubed block. I do not want this to happen again. I will get the slp double roller too, unless theres better. Can anyone point me in the cheapest and right direction. Thanks.

Far as I know, all the double rollers are the Rollmaster, out of Australia. SLP sells 'em, ARE sells 'em (where I got mine), and a few other places.

The other preventive measure I took was to install the ATI Super Damper.

I bought mine from Katech for $100 but I have read on this board that there is another place that sells them cheaper, but I think they are in Australia! Katech has them in stock at all times.
