Default cam swap ?

I'm just about to do a cam swap (TR 224/224). I have everything done except for the actual removal of the old cam. I was planning on just rotating the old cam to push the lifters up into the plastic "retainers" and immediatley install the new cam (as per walkthroughs I've seen posted). Is this a BAD idea, should I use magnets? I really don't want to have to rip the heads off to retrieve a dropped lifter.

Thanks, Ken

Get a bit of insurance with using magnets.
make it look like this..

you will still need to rotate the cam to get
the lifters pushed out of the way.

Use the magnets. For kicks while I was doing my head swap I tried this out. I did have a lifter drop. In my case it wasn't a big deal because the head was off.

Use the magnets. Imagine having a lifter accidently drop during the cam swap. If you would have spent $20.00 on the magnets, you would prevent having to remove the head or heads. The magnets are cheap insurance.

Here's a good tip for ya. After doing many many cam swaps in the LS1 I have yet to use magnets. All I do is take a pushrod and check that each lifter is held up and that I hear a click when I push down on them(while the stock cam is still in!) I spin the cam, push on the lifter and usually feel it "pop" down into place. Once I have went through all the lifters and find them satisfactory, then I pull the old cam and don't wait any time at all to throw the new cam in.

I do something similar...I leave all the pushrods in and spin the cam, if the lifter stays up with the weight of the pushrod it is ok IMO. if it can' handle the weight of the pushrod I hold that lifter with a magnet. Then I remove all the pushrods spin the cam a few more times then swap them

First of all, thanks everyone for your help! After reading all your suggestions I decided to do the pushrod check method that Smoke_ur_5.0 suggested (with the old cam still in place). All the lifters seemed to stay up very well except the two in #5. These would slip back down VERY easily. I went to several stores and could only find 4 magnets so I used two on the #5 lifters and the other two on what I felt were the next most likely to fall. I did the swap quickly without any problem. If I hadn't checked, I'm pretty sure both #5 lifters would have fallen without the magnets. BTW, does this mean there might be some kind of problem with the head at #5? Now I just have to put everything back together and hope she fires right up.

Thanks again, Ken
