Is the oil pan and pump loose? You'll have more room to work.

What a PITA, i would just drop the engine/trans assy out to do a cam swap. Dropping engine is easy and working on the engine when its out is so simple and less stressful.

The pump needs to be loose from the block and the pan unbolted and dropped a little for more room. Makes it much easier.

You can always disassemble the pump and put it the body on the crank, get the pickup tube stabbed, and then install the gears and cover.

Other than that make sure the pan is dropped as much as possible. I put a couple of shop rags in the front portion of the pan and then used a pen magnet to hold the bolt and get it centered.

I disassembled the pump like described above. It also allows you to center it on the crank. I have pictures available if you want. Shoot me your email address.

Remember that you have some rear oil pan bolts that do not go in vertically they are horizontal there is one on each side of the oil pan....you are going to need as much room as possible to do it right..as said in the above post put a clean shop rag in the pan in front to catch the bolt in case you drop it..do not forget to remove the rag when you have the pickup tube bolted on..I know it sounds dumb but someone not long ago forgot his and had to go back in and get it after he started up his engine and it had poor oil pressure..just relax and take your time you will be able to get it..it is a pain in the *** but it can be done...good luck!!...dude its snowing...man that sux..you are hard core if your working in the drive way in the snow..my heart goes out to you..

Once the motor is apart can the corvette pick up tube be swapped for the fbody tube? I know the corvette bolt is on the other side and easy to get to.. Any ideas why?

when I did mine. i loosened all the oil pan bolts just enough but not pull them out. THe pan lowered maybe 1" in the front and that was enough for me to swap pumps. I used thin wire to hold the bolt and put it up and turned it some with my fingers enough to get a thread or two on. then i used my 10mm ratchet with angle end to turn it down mroe before I took the wire off. THis was all laying on my stomach on the ground. took me about 30-40 mins of playing with it.

when i did mine i tied some fishing line around the bolt incase i droped it. that ended up saving my *** big time! a good trick i used to get the bolt back in was to put the bolt in a open-end ratchet wrench, held the bolt to the threads with the wrench, and started it with some small needle nose pliers, then finished threadin it in with two fingers.

Dont sweat the snow in the oil..it will be evaporated in 15 or 20 miles..I hope you are going to change your oil in 50 or 100 miles after the cam swap..

why did you change your oil to drop the pan? did you completely drop the pan, or just bring it down a little to reach the pick-up bolt?
