That does look like a part of the rocker assembly. I'd pull the valve covers real quick to see what kinda shape your retainers are in on the rockers.

Yes it looks like the retainer clip that holds the needle bearings on the trunion of your rocker arm assembly..I would check visually on both sides of all your rockers arms and see if any clips are missing..

Look at the size of it guys. It's on top of an oil cap. My vote is for a thread chunk from the cam behind the cam bolts. They usually go all the way through and it it probably was pushed off the back side from the bolt going in.

That looks nothing like a thread. It is close to the size of the ring on the rocker. Its hard to be exact without a pic of a rocker too.

but how would something that size make its way down to the pan from the head? i mean the holes up there are too small for this thing to come down.. it must be something else..

Neato! Maybe you'll find a diamond in your next change!

I wonder what I'll find in mine! I can't wait!

If it were me, I'd drive it like nothing was wrong. Seriously.

But, then again, I'm a lazy idiot.

Great..I popped one side off last night looked ok.
Gonna do both sides today to make sure..have a dynotune tomorrow!
There was another piece which I couldn't find looked about the same size but it was very very thin, looked like a piece of thread..
But this one that is in the picture was very similar to the size of the threads on the oil pan bolt ..
Right now I'm confused.

Heads are LS6 2003 heads with 15k miles on them.

i have another theory... while reading my August 2006 GMHTP magazine "sitting upon my white throne".. i came upon an article of an LS1 engine build... what you have in your picture looks similar to a piston lock.. or spiral lock.. (the part that keeps the pins from leaving the rods)

just thought of it.. might want to check it too

the stock pistons have press in pins, and no spiral locks though. i cant think of anything inside the motor that it would be besides a part of the rocker arm.

have you noticed any strange/different tapping-knocking?
