Default JPR S2 heads & TR 224 cam dyno results

Joe installed his S2 heads and the TR 224 (112 LSA) cam in my 99 SS over the weekend, and we dynoed yesterday at JD's. Best pull was 422 HP and 392 TQ- through the SLP dual/dual exhaust, with 4.10 gears (stock 10 bolt), and without LS1 Edit tuning. First pull was 397 HP, 375 TQ- which was a 52 HP and 40 TQ improvement over my previous best with TR 220/220 (114 LSA) cam and stock heads. Joe then proceeded to find 25 more HP and 17 more TQ with the MAFT. A/F ratio is still not optimal- there is more in the car with LS1 Edit tuning. A/F ratio was lean on the bottom (14.2-1) and rich on top (12.8:1). With the JPR EWP and LS1 edit tuning I figure I should see 430-440 RWHP, maybe more through the cutout After the MAFT tuning, I picked up 77 RWHP and 57 RWTQ from just a cam swap and the JPR heads! Weather conditions were less than optimal for the dyno- by the time we got done, it was 98 degrees in the shop and the humidity was approx 67%. My motor is experiencing some blowby, which may be robbing a little power. You can see a little smoke coming off the valve cover breather at all times If it gets worse, I guess it will be time for a JPR 382 Great work, Joe!!

Vince- I guess it depends on how wacked your A/F ratio is to begin with. My car was wicked lean and detonating badly to begin with, so Joe changed the plugs and the fuel filter. Initially, I was seeing up to 5 degrees of KR on the dyno. It wasn't easy- we made 15 pulls on the dyno- and Joe is a genious with a translator I believe my car also shows how mail-order programming is a hit-or-miss proposition- I have an Ed Wright custom program in my PCM.

I also have a Ed program that is not right with my new setup. Worked fine on my old one, but the new one did not like it.. Mike Norris told me he is not good with maft tuning, but engine building. Norris Motorsports is planning on getting ls1edit though.. My A/F was pig rich.. 10 to 1 and slowly crept up to 13.. Norris never adjusted the base, just the WOT.. I was told you need many pulls on the dyno to get the maft settings to optimal.. I wonder if I have more left in mine..

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. Joe was afraid people would not believe the numbers- particularly through the SLP dual-dual. We were amazed at how well it flows- I think we only picked up like 3 HP by opening the cutout. Hopefully, Joe will come on and post the dyno sheets soon. No dyno tricks here- the numbers were through full exhaust and no shortbelt. And the car was extremely consistent- pulled between 415-422 HP every pull after the first one. Erin- I hope to have track results soon, but I gotta get my Cartek clutch installed first. Everyone will have to keep in mind that Bristol is a slow track- poor track prep, 1% incline, and 1500 ft. elevation. Hopefully I will get to race with you guys the next time I come to JPR

I thought you would have lost more from with the SLP dual dual as well. Tomorrow I open my cutouts to see if my exhaust is a problem.

Those are impressive numbers.
But one thing that makes me laugh is the comment about the no dyno tricks?

FWIW I'll use my setup as an example.....
A short belt was worth 2.1RWHP on my setup and the cutout did make 4RWHP but lost ALOT of TQ.Not exactly MONSTER HP if u ask me?As a matter of fact I hooked my PS back up and wont run my car threw a cutout until I have MACS back on her....

And the comment about heat,U are running the car on the latest Dynojet software. This program takes the weather into account and corrects the data...

I'm not taking anything away from u,those are impressive numbers for sure but dont make it sound like u left 30 RW on the table...

What do u expect to ET/MPH with the setup?

Good luck w/the setup,Sounds badass...

Vince- there is definitely more in your car through tuning- your Ed Wright program sounds way off. I think you can get another 10-15 RWHP if you get your A/F ratio right. Joe adjusts the base and the WOT- you have to adjust both to get the bottom and the top to come in. Maybe you should give Joe a call or e-mail, I'm sure he'd be happy to give you some tuning pointers.

JS- I didn't say dyno tricks were worth alot of HP, but you and I both know they are worth some. I only was trying to make the point that the car was dynoed EXACTLY AS IT WILL BE RUN ON THE STREET. As far as the dynojet correction factor- yes, I understand SAE corrects for weather conditions. I also was under the impression the correction factor was less accurate at higher temps and humidity. No- I don't think I left 30 HP on the table, but I believe there is 5-10 more peak HP in it, and MORE IMPORTANTLY- more area under the curve if the A/F ratio is stabilized across the board. As far as ET/MPH expectations- I have no idea. I am a relatively inexperienced (new) drag racer, so I am sure my driving skills leave alot to be desired. I am just out there to have fun, to learn, and hopefully to improve little by little each trip to the track. Joe thinks the car can go low elevens, but I doubt it will do that with me behind the wheel.

98TAauto- I will have to come check you guys out. I actually have never been on that board. I am in far Southwest Virginia- actually further west than Detroit- but I am originally from Richmond.

Tom, Eric, Darryl- I hope to see you guys at the track soon!! Let the trash-talking begin!

"Those are impressive numbers.

Joel, you know what he means about "dyno tricks" like running an open Y pipe on the dyno, Splash of race fuel, dynoing with WS 6 wheels and tires in place of his heavy 1999 5 spoke rims, over inflating the rear tires, short belt, letting the car sit on the dyno till it cools down till 165-170 then pull it for the best numbers, CF driveshafts, aluminum flywheels that go undisclosed, you know, stuff like that. None of that was done. JD pulled his car 15 times within 1.5 hours as I was trying to get the MAFT tune acceptable and closer than Ed W's base program. It took 5 pulls alone just to get the base sunk in so it would relation to the WOT and still had KR in the beginning lasting till almost 6,000 RPM still pulling 422 RWH. So whats so funny that makes you laugh? He was dyno tuned "as is" right off the street and left as tuned off the dyno. I will post the sheet soon, but it still needs tunning. his 422 RWH sheets come in at 14.4 @ 2,400 RPM (thats better than 15.2 @ 2,400 when we first started) and dosen't hit 13.0 till 5,200 RPM then nose dives rich 5,500 till 6,800 so thats whats hurting the torque on the bottom and the HP on the top. The translator cannot fix that problem and the PCM is locked out, so an edit session will be preformed with a new PCM in place. I think he did damn well for blowing through a stock cat back and running 4:10 gears. Looking at the dyno sheet vs the WB AF, I think there is about 12 more peak torque and about 5-7 more RWH still in it just fixing the tune, then I am installing his EWP and getting the new numbers AFTER it is tuned perfectly with the stock pump. My goal with his car was 430 RWH through 4:10 gears with a cut out on a perfect tune and it did 422 through his stock dual dual exhaust so I am very pleased with the results at only 10.5 compression.

And lastly..

"And the comment about heat,U are running the car on the latest Dynojet software. This program takes the weather into account and corrects the data..."

Show up at JD's on Friday @5:30 after work and I want to see you lay down your 432 or 440? RWH in 96 degree heat and I will pay for the dyno pulls AND your time, and I want to see how much heat and humidity plays a roll on the dyno and how well the SAE correction works. I want to see for myself. Call me and let me know, or just show up please.

The dynojet software corrects for atmospheric conditions which helps stanardize run comparisons....what it can't correct for is the EFFECT high temps/humidity/Baro has on an engine. If the delta is large enough the engine will get KR, etc and it will kill hp....Dyno in 45 degrees at sealevel with a 0.97 CF vs 98 degrees at 2500ft with a 1.04 CF.....the 45 degree run will always be higher even corrected because the engine will make more hp than the atmospheric correction will reduce due to zero KR, etc. The CF is useful but not perfect.

Default Re: JPR S2 heads & TR 224 cam dyno results

Joe I wasnt trying to knock anyone.
Just making a point that theres no dyno tricks that I know of that get u moe than 5 to 7 RW,lets not get rediculous...

Most shops on LS1tech let us know what was done and the mods are listed after they get there dyno results,There's no trickery?

I do agree that if u run the car with correction software in hot conditions and dont cool the car down the HP/TQ will hurt on the next pull.

But I KNOW YOUR NOT STUPID JOE,I'm sure u gave the car alittle time to cool in between runs...

Again I was just using my car as an example.I didnt get much pulling the belt or opening the cutout. It was worth 5.9 RWHP but I lost 6.9 RWTQ.So it looks like the dyno tricks u are referring to are not as good as u mightve first thought .But every car is different and some will pick up more/less.

I also agree that tuning could grab u another 5 to 10 RW along with the EWP.I dont see why u wont make another 10RW with tuning/pump.

I wasnt taking a shot at your packages,I think there great.

I'm sure BAD is happy and thats all that really matters Joe.

I just found the comments about these so called Dyno tricks alittle biased. There's not that big of an improvement as u guys are implying

Joe,My cars been dynoed.
I told everyone what mods, how it was done.
There's no need to do it again...

Good luck.....
