I don't understand why the performance shops are messing around with these single springs after all the reported breakages from the 941 & 918's. Keep in mind that most of the cars running the 918's have not been tested for extended periods of time say 20,000 or 30,000 miles. If you break a spring just cruising at 70 there is no way the spring is going to last over the long term.

That is true they would need to be re-worked.
Some performance shops install double springs on all Stage II heads but some don't.
To name a few that install them:
TEA
ARE
MTI
I know it boils down to cost but let me ask you: If you design your manufacturing process the same way for each set, will it cost that much more to install double springs vs. single? Think of all the mess you would avoid!
I am not saying that a double spring can't break - they can. But I do think they are stronger than any current single spring design.

Don't forget the guys who do cam only setups...they really need a good drop in spring...
Something obviously changed not that long ago...current breakages are happening within 200 miles of install...thats obviously a problem...
earlier 918s have thousands of miles logged and no problems...

if Comp is having all these issues with the "new springs" i think they need to start upfronting some money for those of us that bent valves and blown crap up
I feel the same way you do Ron.. I ordered 2 extra 918's and now i dont know if the rest of them will even hold up
i still havent gotten the spring off, cause i dont have the tools. But it should be off today. If i scrwed up anything, Comps getting a very nice phone call
In case anyones wondering, me and Rons springs were ordered around the same times so more than likely they were made close together at Comp
this freaking sucks

also like fireball said, what are us cam only guys supposed to do? We cant run double springs. It seems all the breaks are recent though. The guys that have had them for a while havent had a break yet

yes...but when you have 2 springs within 2 states installed within 2 weeks of each other breaking within 200 miles...something sounds fishy

You also have to consider that many people have had valve spring issues before (including me):
Comp Cams 941's for example - -

What is this stirring up the pot crap some of you are talking about. Yeah we know 918 (at least at one time) are good springs, thats why these guys ordered them to put in their cars.
Did it ever occur to you people, who are basically saying "Quite bitching and live with it, it happens only to a few of you", that maybe somethign changed between early runs of 918s and the most recent ones (5 breakages in a month or two) I think its going to be more common, Im scared because it means we may have to go back into the last dozen cam and heads and cam setups weve done
Some of you have gotten lucky breaking springs, but its nothing to be taken lightly. When a spring lets go, everythign from you valves, pushrods, rockers, pistons and cylinder walls/block can be FUBAR

Here is my report of one 918 that broke 4 weeks ago, 175 miles into the new install, cyl # 3 lunched a spring/bent valve = piston ventallation.
Not Happy, I am going back to the 295D Isky's, I have 12-13 sets out there right now with no reported problems. BTW, I figured out whats wrong with the 918 springs I was asked by Comp to let them submit there findings first .E-mail works fine.

JPR,
Do you think there may be a recall or anything based on your findings or anyone else's for that matter?
Purchased my 918's in Jan/Feb '02, but didn't have them installed until May. I am wondering if I should be concerned!! I have about 1,000 miles on them with a B1.

"Painting with a broad brush" here is the deal, if you have springs that have lasted over 600 miles, your most likely in the clear, it's the batch(s) that have been narrowed down to a particular build date(s) that were having problems, thats no mystery there. I found the fundamental problem with the springs that we are talking about here and do yourself a favor, if you feel apprehensive about using them, just spend the extra $ and buy the Isky 295 D's and REMOVE the inner dampner to avoid chewing up the Ti retainers that must be used with them. Nobody is safe right now with virtually any spring thats offered out there right now, BUT, the Isky's or my Proprietary springs are doing just fine with the dampners removed. Do a search on how many Isky 295 springs that have broken and you will find -0-. I absolutly love Comp products and they are the cutting edge for developement IMO, but to become better, the envolope must be pushed in R&D to make perfection.
