Default Boring a 6.0 block??

First of all I am very new to all of this info on boring and stroking of LS1's. I have been reading up as much as possible on the different set ups that the various sponsors are building.
My first question is about the 6.0 liter cast iron block that can be purchased through GMPP.
Would it not be more reliable and also more cost
effective to bore out the block as far as possible and not have to resleeve
as you would in a LS1 block? I understand that
the weight is more and that you would not be able
to achieve a displacement similiar to what MTI has done with say their 422 kit. But if you
compared the displacements to the 393 kit that
MTI builds I think it would be close??
Thanks in advance guy's,
Dave

I am running an Agostino Racing 422ci iron block setup. It's a 6.0 block, used, that was bored out to 4.060.

A 6.0 block is 4.000 bore stock. I have heard of 1-2 cars running 4.080 bore setups but that is rare.

I do think that this approach could be cheaper and more reliable but you do put 70 lbs on the car.

We are redoing my combo right now to see if it will be competitive with big-bore 4.100 stuff, I hope to run high 12_mph with the new setup.

I'd like to see where that goes. How similar is the 6.0 block to the stock one? Will I be able to use parts for the 5.7 in the 6.0 block? I am thinking about going this route also as it seems a lot more cost effective and I believe an iron block will probably be able to handle a 300 shot. Thanks.

I have the iron block setup and am very happy with it. I went with a tubular K member to offset some of the weight. With Stage 3 GTP heads and a fairly aggressive solid roller cam, my 409 cu in setup puts down some pretty stout #'s. I haven't taken it to the track yet due to multiple wheel and tire issues... but I am hoping to have that all resolved in the next couple of weeks...

Were you able to reuse most everthing off the old block? I wasn't sure if you could or not. Do you have any idea what the displacement is on the 6.0 block is before the bore? Trying to compare this to doing a 383 stroker kit cost wise.

As far as I know everything will swap except pistons and rings. The stock displacement is 366ci

Correct, you only have to drill and tap an extra hole on the lower right front of the block for the alternator bracket... Do this before having machine work done on the block so if you mess up... you don't lose all of your machine work as well.

Other than the pistons and rings, everything else bolts in or on...

Hey Shane,

Did you bore to 375 and then stroke it? What stroker kit would you use in that situation? 4.1XX?

Thanks
Wes

There was a recent magizine article in Vette that described an iron block Gen III conversion (1999 Vette) for a displacement of 427CI. It said all components (heads, pullies, brackets, etc) are interchangeable and that the iron block was used for cost savings and was thought to be stronger than a bored and re-sleeved aluminum LS1 block. I thought the engine work was done by CarTek but I could be wrong.

I thought the article said the additional weight was about 125 LBS, however....UHG!
