Default Time to Speak - 26918 Spring Failures

Well guys, I have had two spring failures in the last two weeks. One of these resulted in a shattered piston. According to Comp Cams, they will not provide any compensation for the damage and also the gentlemen that I talked to claimed to only know about one spring failure. He must be new...

Here are some pics. There are pieces of the piston in the intake as well as the oil pan.

What really gets me mad is the fact that Comp advertises this spring good to 0.600", claims there has been one failure, and says there are no problems.

I know from a reliable source that there IS a problem and it is related to certian "batches".

Comp better come across with an answer to this soon or they risk litigation.

Just a note to let everyone know to BEWARE!

Sorry to hear that man. Products like that make a great shop look bad. I hope the guy realizes that its not your fault. Any way you slice it its a bad deal. Maybe time to switch to Manley? I will be getting in touch with you in the next week or so to firm up my install (clutch and LT's).

Oh they break And they damn sure know its more than one cause we have been on the phone with them! Ours were sent in to them for testing today as a matter of fact. Those pics are just SICK But mine could have very well ended up the same way. I think yours and mine both broke on cyl 4 exhaust?
I only have .563 lift also and mine broke with around 175-250 miles

I'm going with the Isky 295D's singles' with my b1 cam (.558) lift with gtp heads. Was originally going to do 918's but definitely going to stay away because it appears to be some quality control issues of late.

Broke a 941 early on when that was the only option for a spring and learned that the 941 was really for short term use only like a 500 mile endurance race.

SB, the 941's were a batch problem, just like the 918's. I had 941's in for 17,000 miles with a .574 lift with no problems at all. Changed them preventitively with doubles when freshening up the H/C package.

Mikey,
I replied your E-mail, let me know if I could be of anymore assistance, New install guys, don't worry, just get the 295 Isky's and remove the inner dampner and you will be fine. Like we went over in another thread, the 918 springs will break within 200 miles of spirited driving/dynoing if defective.. Ooops, I used that word. If they last up to 1,000 miles, you should be in the clear. It's hard to nail down a "production date" and there is no "batch" number on the box. BUT the bad sets I have seen/heard of and have consulted customers about with this problem seem to have been purchased on or about June to the begining of Aug of 02.

Niphilli,
Do not use the Manley Nex Tek springs, there is a certain tuner that has used them religously in the past and they drop like flies. I had 2 customers break the Manley's with a 218/.528 cam and a 216 cam.

Joe.

Damn, 98T, looks like you were lucky...

I just sat here squealing and groaning over Mikey's pics like some people do when they're watching... I dunno... "Faces of Death", or something.

Mikey, it actually hurt to see them pics, man...

the thing that sucks is anyone could really fack up a engine with a spring break. Even cruising around

Mikey, im gonna have nightmares tonight from your pics... hopefully you're getting her up and running again

a few of us sent comp some emails tonight so hopefully they get the picture here.

I am hoping I am a lucky one..got mine way back in like april and have like 3000 miles on them with no problems so far so maybe ok.I thought someone else makes double springs that don't need head machining ..double springs sound much safer right?? I still plan on new heads next year and will get double springs on them for sure..didn't think just breaking a spring can do so much expensive damage..but after seeing some of these pictures..obviously it can.It does suck that most parts companies don't compensate or do dick when one of their products screws up stuff..sometimes they deserve when they get their butts sued off.
What can you do..
