Default ARP head studs - installing with motor in the car?

I'm doing a heads install this weekend and was wondering if anyone has installed or removed a set of heads with ARP head studs with the motor still in the car? We have done a few of them with the motor out, but none like this as of yet. I have heard it has been done and others said it's not possible.

Any experiences?

And no, these aren't my heads. Those go on in a few weeks.

I have not done this but I remember seeing a post that said it could be done. Good Luck!

Last I heard according to Jayson at MTI it was possible. I beleive Visceral (on this board) blew his motor and pulled it apart in his garage, and I know he had head studs.

Good question.

What would be getting in the way?

Yep, they fit with plenty room to spare.

No, we didn't finish up today. We got a late start and Justin has to work at 6am tomorrow. We also need to fix one ground on the back of the driver's side cylinder head. The "eye" connector that the bolt goes through was pretty fatigued and eventually snapped off while getting it in place. We will finish up next Sunday. Having school and work all week sucks!

Install is easy. Clean out all the bolt holes really good, install the studs and torque them to 5 ft/lbs. We used a special socket to drive the studs in. Apply the supplied ARP lube on the tops of the bolts and nuts and torque them in 4 stages to 65ft/lbs.

EVIL, Cometic head gaskets would be a good choice ( stronger), however you can use the stock ones with them. Thunder Racing should have all the parts you need.

Once you set the head over the studs you place the washers and nuts on top. You use the same sequence as stock but torque the nuts in 4 stages to 65ft/lbs.

Stock bolts have to be torqued using an angle gauge and are not re-usable. With the studs you don't have to ever clean the bolt holes out again, buy new head bolts, or deal with angle torquing the bolts.

Ok, i have a question.

When you put the studs in, does the stud take up the WHOLE bolt hole so there is no gap for coolant to leak down into next time I pull the heads off, or are the studs a little smaller in diameter? I think I'd stud the block if it meant I'd never have to clean out those bolt holes again.

Is that a standard torque used for heads [not] using torque to yield bolts (ie: SB Chevy)?

Ron,

BTW, I would assume the smaller M-8mm bolts along the top of the heads would need a torque value much less than 65 ft/lb?
