I was wondering what were the differences between a 98 LS1 and 2002 short blocks??? Is one stronger than the other?? I have a chance to pick up a 2002 short block to replace my 1998 short block.

I seem to recall reading that the 01-02 blocks use LS6 pistons with some sort of coating to help wear along the cylinder wall along with some new type of piston ring to help with oil consumption. As for the actual block composition... I don't think they'd be different, but I don't know for sure.

My understanding is the 01-02 blocks are LS1 blocks and the late 01 cars and 02 cars got a different oil ring and a coating on the LS1 pistons.
