Default Question about Rods and rod/main bolts

I want to get new or after market rod/main bolts and bearings. Is this possible to do without buying new rods? I want to keep may same stock rods and just get new or better than stock rod/main bolts and bearings. Please help. I just bought some foraged pistons that can be used with the stock rods and crank. Will i have to buy a whole new set of rods in order to get new bolts and bearings?

A set of connecting rod bearings can be had from GM or Clevite, etc

I would check with some of our sponsors to see if they sell aftermarket ARP rod bolts. I believe they are avail as a stock replacement.

As for the main bearings: I personally cant see that you would need to replace the main bearing cap bolts. And you certainly dont want to replace the main crank bearings unless you like to remove the entire crank from the engine.

Federal mogul makes replacement bearings. Not sure of the part # though. ARP sells good replacement rod bolts (do a search to get the part number, i've seen it floating around in the past)

I'm using federal mogul main and rod bearings.
There are 2 choices for mains from them I believe and several for the rods as they are the same as small block chevy large journals.
I am also using ARP rod bolts with stock rods.
Here is what I used in my home rebuild-
Fed Mog- mains- #7298m( factory style aluminum)
"" - rods- 2555cp( tri-metal street/strip)
arp rod bolts- 134-6006(190,000psi)
Good luck.

Katech has good Rod Bolts also. They say they are different than the ARP's FWIW. They build the C5R's. $122/set.

ARP Hi-Performance (8740 Chrome moly, 190K tensile strength) - 134-6006 (full set)
ARP Pro-Series (proprietary alloy, 220k tensile strength) - 234-6301 (full set)

You should be able to pick up a set of the Hi-Perf. for $70-$75. The Pros should be $125-$130

Nice to have options.

Anyone want to decipher the tensile strength of the Katech Rod Bolts? Stock Rod Bolt strength?

"Katech LS1 rod bolt upgrade - extensive testing by GM for the ASA engine package showed the production rod bolt was the weak link in the stock bottom end in LS1 engines. Our rod bolt is the best you can get and fits production connecting rods. These direct replacement bolts are made from M11 material for extremely high tensile strength with threads rolled to J graded tolerances."

Im looking to get the ARP rod bolts from summit racing but right now they are out of stock. Does anyone know where eles i could get some?

My motor is all riped apart right now. As we speak my crank is getting turned. So i can't get any bearing til my crank is done getting turned. I do want to buy the rod/main bolts right now though. I do like your setup SJH but what site did you get your parts from? SO i can look up those part numbers.

I bought the last Summit set in stock two weeks ago. Jegs had 6 sets in stock at that time so you might want to give them a try.

Cool thanks guys I just ordered some ARP Rod bolts and GM Main bolts (Since there are no aftermarket one out yet) from Paceparts.

Now it is time to talk about Bearings.... By looking at my mods and my upcomming mods. What bearing would you replace? Cam bearings, Rod, etc?

Due to the LS1 rod being a "cracked" rod design, is it possible to install this rod bolts without resizing the rods? thanks.

I know this is an old thread but is of interest to me. Because I will be doing my rebuild soon. What were the GM part numbers for the main bolts????
Ps. The federal mogul are still listed as back ordered at summit. Does anyone know the part numbers for the GM mains if I can't get the federal mogul bearings( although that would be a last resort)
