Default head gasket question??

What is the difference between using a smaller head gasket (0.040 cometic) and milling heads to X amount compared to using a gm mls head gasket(0.052 ?) and milling the heads more than X?

The quench would be less in the first instance, but how would that compare to more milling and a thicker gasket in the second instance?

What differences in performance would there be?

quench is the biggest thing really the main reason to use a thinner headgasket. problems could arise if you cannot mill the heads enough to get the right compression.

By using a thinner gasket you tighten up the quench area, milling does not do this. Tight quench area aids in prevention of detonation and promotes evenly mixed combustion.

To drop chamber volume by one cc, it takes .0065 (6.5 thou). To do the same with a gasket, it only requires .005.

And lik ethe others mentioned, quench is nice.

Where are you finding a GM mls gasket with a compressed thickness of 0.052??

All I was able to find is 0.056 and 0.060.

The MLS gaskets are advertised as .060 but in most cases, they mic out to about .052 -.054.

That's what I heard as well, and ended up ordering. They are cheaper than cometics, and keep me in a safe PtoV setup.
