Default Which freeze plugs to remove and how?

Are these two freeze plugs gold in color? I found the one above the starter and the one behind the alternator. What kind of a tool does this take? Do you have to remove the starter and alternator to get to these plugs?

And if I remove these two plugs then I am draining all the coolant from the block? And this will mean I won't be spilling coolant when I remove the heads?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, those are the freeze plugs you need to remove. They have an Allan/Hex head on them. The one above the starter is pretty common size, but the one above the alternator might require you to go to the Autoparts store to get the correct size.

You do have to remove the starter. It would make it easier to take the alterntor off, but it can be done with it in place.

You will get nearly all the coolant out of the block. Very little will come off when you take the heads off if you do this.

Make sure to put some thread sealer on them when re-installing.

Thanks for the reply Jason. I appreciate it very much.

How do you go about cleaning the head bolt threads?

I know that your car and probably most you work on have studs but I hope to only take my heads off no more that twice in the next 12 months. So, for money reasons I am sticking with the stock bolts.

for cleaning headbolt threads I always blow them out with comressed air through a piece of brakline fixed to a blowgun. then run a 'bottom tap' in each of the holes. makes for really smooth assembly. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
