Default Flywheel Install/balance issue PLEASE HELP

I posted this in the driveline section as well, thought I would post here as well if somebody knows anything about this please help.

I just had my 2000 Vette motor rebuilt and am reinstalling. I am installing the flywheel and my service manual is telling me I have to install the flywheel the same way it came off. I scribed it before I took it off, but now that it is back from the machine shop the mark is gone. Does it matter how the flywheel is installed on the Crank? There is an extra hole in the flywheel (not a bolt hole) and one on the crank. Should I use that for line up? It is a 6 spd with stock flywheel.

I have read the flywheel is neurtal balance, if so why would it matter how you reinstall it on the Crank?

I would appreciate feedback, it would make me feel a lot better if I was sure I was putting it back together correctly.

Thanks

It does matter how the flywheel is replaced relative to the position on the crank. Did you put the flywheel weights from the old flywheel back into the same position on the new flywheel? This must be done too. It is true that the flywheels are neutrally balanced. I suggest you refer to Steve Row and Phil97SVT in this post before proceeding:

OK ... whadya do if you are installing a new flywheel?

On my '98, I just installed a new flywheel and I aligned the bolt holes and a single unused hole.

We buttoned it all up and guess gonna hope for the best.

What are teh symptoms of an out of balance flywheel?

Thanks for the info. I must of not stated my post clearly, I am putting the old flywheel back on the crank, it is not a new one. The issue is I don't know what position to put it in, the scribe marks are gone. And there are weights on the flywheel. From the link that was given it sounds like they balance it to the crank. With that being said it sounds like there is no way of telling what the correct position is. So does that mean I have to install it and keep my fingers crossed? And what is that extra hole about on the flywheel and the crank, it seems logical that you would match the two up--but then again you can't always second guess GM.

Sounds kind of crazy but I am at a loss.

Any more help would be appreciated.

Out of balance symptoms would be vibration.

I am like you I assumed that extra hole was for alignment. The Factory manual however states there is no alignment pin. And thier illustrations even show that extra hole. But they aren't alligning the two in the picture???????????

You can't find out anyway else. You'll have to install it and hope it doesn't vibrate at 2500-3500 RPMs <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

F-body motors aren't subjected to the same QA and tolerances that the Y-Body motors are. Hence this is why all of the fellow F-body members can slap on flywheels in any orientation, minus the factory flywheel weights etc. The Y-body motors are balanced by technicians that spin motors up to 2500 RPM and add/remove balance weights as needed to have it balanced. The LS6 motors are spun to a much higher RPM and have weights added/removed at the flywheel and/or harmonic balancer.

F-body motors have it "easier" so to speak.
