Default Offset ground stock crank + stock cubes. What CI and how much extra power?

With the power that h/c are begining to put out nowadays, I am considering staying with the stock cubes and put some forged pistons/rods in it. If I spent a little extra to have the crank offset ground, what cubes would that put me at and how much extra power could that make on average?

It's going to depend on if you are NA, or not. With a power adder, 3.70 is about your max on the stroke. NA, I'm not sure on how hight it can go. I can't find my notes. From memory, I know that 3.72 is doable.

You can figure it all out here http://www.aera.org/tech/cube_calc.html
If you know the bore, you can experiment with the stroke to get the cubes you want.

For nitrous, I have had my crank offset ground to 3.70. On an all bore from ARE, with bore at 4.100, that comes out to 393.

ARE can offset grind your crank for you.

ARE use to make a 360 which I thought was an offset ground crank and stock bore. Nick told me he didn't really think it was a good cost/HP ratio when I redid my motor.

chris pippy has one and he is one of the slowest big cube motor guys I know.

It depends upon the Rod Journal size.

A 2.000" rod journal goes to a 3.722 max stroke offset gound

A 1.880" Honda Journal goes to a 3.842 max stroke offset ground

A 1.774" (I think) Mitsubishi Journal goes to a 3.948 max stroke offset gound.

Now the problem is that the crank gets weeker with a smaller rod journal and less overlap between the rod journal and the main journal.

So don't do it! unless you want a 400hp max 380 cube engine! Over that you will break it!

Okay, yeah I believe it would be a 360. How much power would an extra 15 or so cubes give (for $350)? About the crank breaking, I can understand it, but I don't recall hearing much about anyone breaking an LS1 crank, not even a ground one. Anyone ever hear of that happening?

400 HP max? How did you arrive at that?!

I had a 3.722 stroke 3.905 bore setup with ARE Stage II H/C plus a 150 TNT setup. That shortblock is still going strong in another guy's car.

We will be using the Honda/Acura bearings, FYI. This setup will be seeing a nice amount of nitrous, but it's still going to make some really nice power N/A. A set of our stage III 6.0L heads will top off the combo. We are planning to have it together and running for the Spring Break Shootout. We're going to do some various testing with it, and if all goes well we will be offering it as a short-block and long-block. It will be a less expensive way to gain the cubes, and who doesn't like the ring of 396 cubic inches?

We'll keep everyone posted as the new setup progresses.
