Dyno: GTP Stage2/TR227 vs ARE stage2/MTI-B1
First off, let me say that yes, I'm an odd person. I decided to do heads/cam (not only once, but TWICE!) on my LS1 *BEFORE* I even touched the exhaust, so this heads/cam car has stock manifolds, stock cats, stock takeoff Z06 catback.
So, my first setup I tried was my ARE Stage 2 heads off my Camaro (they made 415rwhp on the camaro with exhaust done) I had last year, along with the MTI B1 cam. Through bone stock exhaust, it made 363rwhp. Figured the 50rwhp difference was from the HUGE restriction of stock manifolds. No biggie.
So, time went on and I had a buyer for my ARE heads, so I decided to contact thunder racing and order up a new setup. Figured while I was changing the heads I might as well go with the "latest and greatest" cam that wouldnt compromise my drivability or idle, so I chose the Thunder 227/224 on a 114lsa. Since the crank pulley on a C5 is hard to get to, now was the time to change to an ASP underdrive as well.
Now, the dyno before and after....the 3 things that changed are:
1) ARE stage 2's -> GTP/TR Stage 2 heads
2) MTI 221/221 114 -> TR 227/224 114
3) stock crank pulley -> ASP crank pulley
Here's the graph....
<img src="http://home.austin.rr.com/tyr/c5/dyno_small.jpg" alt=" - " />
(note, I had to overlay the ARE graph (Scanned in at lower res) onto my new one as they shop didnt print out a comparison graph, so thats why it looks odd).
My 2nd run I dyno'd 393rwhp but I didn't print it out. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> Either way, this has to be as high as I've ever seen an all motor LS1 dyno with stock manifolds, stock cats, and gm OEM catback! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> I cant even imagine what it'd be like with longtubes and an offroad Xpipe <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
Thanks to thunder racing for the parts, they had everything in stock for me. <img border="0" alt="[chug]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_chug.gif" /> They'll be flowtesting my ARE heads to see how they compared to these GTP heads so I can get numbers off the same bench. The results will be interesting.

Interesting info!! There was a guy at the mti dyno day who dynoed 400rwhp through a stock exhaust system. This was in a camaro, I believe he goes by aaron on this board.

Wow..400rwhp? I wonder if I actually had some tuning on the car if I could pick up the extra 9rwhp to hit 400. I either gotta buy LS1 edit soon or pay somebody to dyno tune for me. <img border="0" alt="[fight]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_punch.gif" />

Damn dude that is amazing with stock manifolds, cats etc.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> That is one hell of a sleeper! <img border="0" alt="[boring]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_zzz.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> Are you still going to shell out the $1500 for headers? I would think with a decent exhasut you will be in the 430-450rwhp range with proper tuning.

Wow I'm impressed Jon! Now get some longtubes damnit!
Your gonna be in the 440 rwhp range once you get some LTs and some tuning. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Nice numbers!
I would have liked to see the same cam used on both heads and the UD pulley thrown on afterwards (I know it is a PITA though)
I think you have a strong running package there! How old were the ARE heads?
Cheers,
Chris

are the dyno's on the same machine? what are the correction factors for each of the dyno sessions?

Re: Dyno: GTP Stage2/TR227 vs ARE stage2/MTI-B1
Java The dyno's were on the same dyno. All my dyno's for the past 3 years have been on the same dyno in fact. The correction factor for my ARE dyno was 1.00, the correction factor for my GTP dyno was 1.02, the actual numbers I think were 385rwhp.
Chris ARE 360 , I would have liked to as well, but it was just too much work and I didn't have that sorta time. Subtract 5 or so for the ASP pulley and figure the other 25 was from cam/head changes. People have made nearly 400rwhp with stock heads and a B1, so the B1 can't be that bad.....the heads probably are a key part here. Maybe not though. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
LOCO, hey, I might be down at RCR soon to run it. I'll be the guy running 13's at 1teen (hopefully!)mph. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
Jsears8 , I'm definitly getting headers, don't worry. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> The car is a total sleeper right now though, its amazing. I can cruise through a parking lot and nobody would really know its modded. <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />
Thanks everybody else for the comments.

Nice numbers Jon. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> 390rwhp w/ stock manifolds/cats/OEM exhaust is sick! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> I'm glad everything worked out like you wanted.
Ship out those ARE heads and I'll get some flow numbers on them if you like.

Re: Dyno: GTP Stage2/TR227 vs ARE stage2/MTI-B1
ARE heads might have done a little better with an ARE matched cam.
Looks like a good arguement for GTP and TR!

Nope I have a 98 Formula LS1 powered car. I had a red 95 ATI SCd Z-28 before that and a 94 black hardtop A4 Z28 before that.

Re: Dyno: GTP Stage2/TR227 vs ARE stage2/MTI-B1
Congratulations Jon!!! Now get those LT quick and I want to see what you get!! If it is worth it I might change my heads to GTP too!!
I was holding out on the ARE heads!! But I have to say they SUCK!! Sorry!
With my ARE heads and TR 227 cam I got 412 rwhp with tuning, 382, and all the good stuff!!!!!
After I took the car to MTI, they fixed the heads and changed the valves and did a flow test before and after (ARE heads flowed about 275 CFM, After MTI did what they did, they flowed about 295 CFM).
At the same time I did a cam swap with the X1. I think the X1 and the TR 227 should not far from each other. If they are maybe 4-5 more rwhp in my opinion!
The result, I got 450 rwhp!!! So, in conclusion, ARE heads suck and I am down $1000 for fixing them!!
