Default Cam Help Needed Please!

I have a 2001 SS-1LE M6. I am about to install headers, cam and gears. I want to keep the stock heads though. I want the roughest idle possible with an LS1. I will tune it with ls1 edit. But i want this cam to lope hard. Dont get me wrong, i want it to sound good--not sound like ****--, but i want to have the badest, roughest sound possible. Any recomendations on cams.

Any help is greatly appreciated

so you are getting a cam for lope and not the power?

Well you could go with a TR reverse split 227/224 or even the TR 230/224

those should make for good power and a rough idle. Also another one which may not make as much power is the LS1 hotcam. I believe the hot cam is a 218/228 not sure though.

Well the deal is, I am 17, and am still making payments on the car every month. My car(ss) is all stock except for a loudmouth exhaust. It runs consistent 12.8s but i rarely race it. Its got plenty of power for the street, really too much for a 17 year old. But the only reason i didnt mention power differences in my question is because I know just about all cams add power so im not worried about that, but since im not even looking for power since i drive it on the street, i want the car to sound good and lope really hard and rough.

Under the conditions you list (age & financial situation), do yerself a huge favor: Don't mod the car. If you back yerself into a corner (one little accident or mechanical failure), yer toast.

I was the same way back when. Thankfully, cars were a lot cheaper...

If you wanna have a fast car that won't break ya, get a 3rd gen and mod it. Parts are waaaaay cheaper $$$.

My vote is for the GM hot cam. Pretty cheap, it will add power and give a rough lopey idle <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> I love my hot cam.

I'd just be glade to have a nice Z at 17. When I was 17 I had to settle for a 84 Z cause the 93 would've cost me $318 a month to insure. (one ticket on my record) Anyway that said, I'd go for a cam with more duration for the lope and a lower lift so you don't have to buy all new springs and stuff. And maybe like 112 or so LSA. That should get your cd player skipping for ya...

Thanks for all of the help, so could someone explain what lift, duration, and lobe separation have to do with how smooth or rough the idle is. As in (more lift = rougher idle) stuff like that.

Idle quality is affected mostly by duration and overlap. Duration is how long (in terms of rotational degrees) the valves are open, and overlap is how long the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time.

In general, a cam with a tighter lobe separation angle has more overlap. It will usually have a rougher idle than a similar cam with a wider LSA. So, the T1 (112 LSA) cam will idle rougher than the B1 cam (114 LSA) even though the lift and duration are the same.

In general, the more duration the cam has, the rougher it will idle, all other things being equal. At low duration numbers, the differences will be relatively minor. At around 218-220 degrees of intake duration, idle quality starts to degrade quickly, and may require PCM tuning and/or drilling of the throttle body blade.

Idle quality is more of an issue for A4 cars than for M6 cars.
