They both do. It all has to do with the opening and closing points of the valves. Widening LSA will open the intake valve later and close the exhaust valve sooner. Retarding the cam would open the intake later and close the exhaust later. Advancing is just the opposite. Point is, you can run into p to v clearance problems by advancing or retarding just as easily as you can with widening or narrowing LSA. One thing though, Advancing or retarding usually biases the chance of either the intake or exhaust hitting, but playing around with LSA can affect both intake and exhaust since you are affecting overlap. Clear as mud?
