How much to get a 2001 LS1 lifter fixed?

Default How much to get a 2001 LS1 lifter fixed?

A guy selling a '01 Z28 said there's noise coming from the motor and that it's probably a lifter.

I wouldn't be doing the work, obviously. I'm just wondering if it would be a good deal. The car has 86,000 miles on it and is going for $6495. The rest of the car is in good shape.

If it is lifters for sure, you'll need to yank off the heads:
Parts needed:
Lifters
gaskets
head bolts
fluids

Labor depends on where you take it, but it is an average 6 hour job.

IMO, take the car somewhere where they can diagnose the noise first. Then make your decision.

that's insane cheap. Take it to a shop and see what they say, if it's good news then buy it and fix it and you'll still come out cheap

i would make the guy take it to the closest dealer and have it properly diagnosed by a GM tech...

Same here...I'd do the same. Changing the lifters isn't that bad of a job, but it wouldn't be good to tear it down to fix something that isn't broke.

Get a second, or third opinion...it'll be worth it.

you have to remove the heads to replace the lifters. it is a HUGE deal. its going to cost you well over $1000.

good news is that its probably not actualy a big deal and you could drive the **** out of the car for years and thousands of miles and it be fine.

... except if it's a rod bearing instead of a lifter. People selling used cars have been known to lie, on occasion. I echo the advice to take it to a GM dealer and have it examined by a certified technician. That's probably the best $100 you'll spend on that vehicle.

Again...

Take it to a dealer and get another opinion. Swapping them out isn't that bad and there is no sense trashing a good motor by thinking it'll last for thousands more miles.

echo advice above

however, if it does end up being a short block issue, you can talk him down to $4k, pick up a shortblock from one of the vendors here for ~$3500 and still come out good
