Default Shipping my heads back to ARE, need advice

Barry at ARE has agreed to take my heads and fix them, but I'm afraid it will be awhile without my car. So I was wondering if I could get a set of used (or maybe new if cheap enough) stock heads and just use them temporarily. What are the price ranges for 5.3L, 5.7L, and 6.0L heads? I can't find any PN on them. Any one have the PNs? And where would be a good place to get them? I'm assuming I would need to transfer my springs over though since I do have a high ramp cam.

Also, would it be perfectly alright to reuse the gaskets and bolts if I just wanted to use them temporarily? I mean, what's the worst that could happen? Tell me the worst thing that could happen by reusing all the stuff. Hopefully it won't be long before I get my heads back anyway.

Ask Barry if they have two assembled cores you could use? Might be a lot cheaper. As far as bolts, just buy some head studs then don't worry about them again. Two sets of bolts would run you the cost of some head studs. If you reuse them you might blow a head gasket due to poor torque. Some other things may occur as well.

The gaskets are fairly cheap. If you can use the new laminated metal gaskets I believe you can reuse those. If it's the graphite type of gasket definitely get new ones.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd rather just have my own set of heads as a backup, I think it'd cost alot to ship a set of loaner heads back and forth anyway. So would it be around $300 for all 3 of them? In that case, what head would be better? I think I'd lean towards the 5.3L heads since I read that their port design is better than the 5.7L head? Any PNs?

I think I'll look into the ARP head studs. How much can I get them for? And do you have the PN on the reusable head gasket?

I think the 6.0 and 5.3 heads generally cost a little bit more than the 5.7's. But you should be able to find a set in the classifieds if you can't get some from valvegod or find a better price.

I would get 6.0L heads and just change the springs and enjoy until your other heads come back. You could always send your 6.0L heads to get CNC'd for the time being..

You'd better opt for 5.7 or 6.0L heads, the 5.3 are IMPOSSIBLE to get from Valvegod.

I just found that out. It looks like the 6.0L heads are alittle more costly than the 5.7L heads too. Is this supply and demand or is this because the 6.0L heads are better (in terms of the porting)? The 5.7L heads are bare as well, I don't have my stock valves anymore. How much do valves cost and where should I get them? Or should I go on ebay and just look for a set of used 5.7L heads? Valvegod sells never used 5.7L heads. Also, does anyone have the PNs for these heads? I'd like to just look up 5.3L heads and see how much they cost.

Are these the ARP head bolts I need? I went to jegs and did a search :
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...44&prmenbr=361
These are reusable right?

Thanks guys.

Okay, nevermind about the LS1 vs 6.0L head. I did a search and it seems like 6.0L heads should be superior to the LS1 heads. Now if I could only get a PN, then I could compare the used price to the new price and make a decision. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Still would like to know about the ARP head bolts though. Thanks!

Hey guys -
here's a little known fact, 6.0L head castings are the same as LS6, with the exception of bigger combustion chambers. intake and exhaust ports are the same. e-mail me, and maybe I can help.

I would not go with the 5.3L heads as a plain swap.. They flow less than the 5.7's secondary to the smaller valves.. Therefore performance would suck.

About the head gaskets, what are the pro and cons for the earlier GM head gaskets and the 2002+ GM head gaskets?

I think I found the right ARP part, those were the bolts. I found the studs.

And thanks guys for mentioning a few more sources for 6.0L heads.
