What would happen if a grain of sand was in engine? I am in the process of putting my engine back together. What would happen if one piece of dirt was left in the cylinder or head? How bad would this be?

If you have a few grains of sand in the crankcase, your oil filter will take care of it.
So, tell us how you managed get get sand in the engine anyway... Ever hear the phrase "Cleanliness is next to Godliness"?

Re: What would happen if a grain of sand was in engine? depends on the size. if the piece of dirt is say, the size of a golf ball, the life of the engine would likely be shortened somewhat. on the other hand a piece of dirt 50 microns or so in diameter would probably go unnoticed, even in a honda.

just be sure and change the oil as soon as possible after you fire it up and are confident it will stay together. and in the future, keep the garage door closed while your working on your engine. good luck.

Re: What would happen if a grain of sand was in engine? You will be fine with small grains of dirt or sand. I usually get a lil dirt in on the heads here and there when I pull the valvecovers, but I let the oil filter take care of it. Never had a problem, just change your oil after about 100 miles if you're worried about it.

Re: What would happen if a grain of sand was in engine? I'm not concerned with dirt in the oil as much as getting into the cylinder or intake ports. I used a grain of sand as an example.
