Default TR220 has 4 degrees advance built in > Retard it 2 degrees?

This may or may not be a good question, but....

The TR220 cam =
220/220 .553"/.553" 114 LSA and 110 IC

That 114 LSA and 110 IC gives it a 4 degree ground-in advance.

I will be installing an adjustable Rollmaster Timing Set with new Jwis chain.

If it was up to you, would you just put it in dot to dot which will keep it at 4 degrees advanced, or retard the cam 2 degrees and wind up with a total of 2 degrees of advance?

Which one will give better throttle response on a daily driver? (head/cam/header with cats car + 2,800 stall yank, 3.23)

Thanks,
Ron

I reccomend 110*ICL i just advanced my cam with rollmaster chain and car feels better in all ranges. Chain has little play but over time this should end up a good compromise.I am going to try top race car Sunday to see if this advance has helped performance, i will post results.

Thanks.. Keep us posted.

So, I understand you got a total of 4 degrees advance when installing it?

If your cam is within spec, I would assume a 114 LSA with a advertised 110 IC installed dot to dot would put it at 4 degrees advanced. Did you advance it more with the adjustable Timing Gear Set?

BTW, That Rollmaster Timing Gear Set lets you adjust in increments of 2 degrees advance or retard ... Isn't that correct?

Thanks,,,

I have a 112* lSA that is advanced 4* to bring centerline to 108*. I was recomending 110* ICl for others with 114* LSA. Timing set is adjustable in 2 degree increments, positive and negative up to 8*.

Ron,

4 degrees is too much advance for that small of a cam. It would make more power and torque everywhere if you retarded it 4 degrees so the intake centerline was 114. This will put your intake closing point at 44 degrees ABDC and your power will peak at around 6100-6200. Keeping the ICL at 110 will drop your power peak about 200 rpms and you will also lose about 5 rwhp and 5 rwtq across all rpms levels.

LS1derfull ... Patrick G

Thanks for the info.

I may be wrong, but it seems you two are not in agreement as far as how much advance/retard to put the TR-220 in at.

The cam was put on a Cam Doctor. It came up with a 113.5 LSA and a 110 IC. Put in dot to dot, that would give it 3.5 degrees of advance (if I understand this correctly)

If I didnt put it in dot to dot, but rather set the Rollmaster gear set to 2 degrees retarded, that should decrease the advance from a + 3.5 to a + 1.5 degrees advance.

Am I right so far?

I guess my question now is; Would I be better off dot to dot which yields 3.5 degrees advanced or set the timing set to 2 degrees retarded and wind up with 1.5 degrees advanced.

Sorry for my confusion <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

I agree with Patrick G about smaller cams will make more power with less advance. I moved my cam advanced to make the most of 3.42 gear and the real soft 60 ft. my car has. My cam is bigger than a TR 220* also. I am tuning to make car accellerate quicker, this isnt the same as best RWHP readings. I say you install cam where it will be most effective for your combo. My car weighs 3525 in race form.If i put 4.10's and 12 bolt in than i may go back to straight up with my cam. I hope this helps, Jeff.

Ok i was only able to get one good run today, but i picked up 2 tenths and 1 mph in the 1/8 mile from advancing cam 4* over all my previous runs. I went from 12.2 best to 12.05 at 114.8o mph my 1/4 speed would have been improved also but i granny shifted 3 to 4 because of my miss shift paranoia! I got what i was looking for from this mod.

Nice improvment!

Well you advance it 4 degrees more than you had before. I take it the cam already had a 2 degree ground-in advance? Gave ya a total of 6 degrees advance...

Ron you are right but i look at that 2* ground in as chain slack compensation. I can confidently say that car didnt lose any power used to run the 1/4.Car would have 60 ft. harder also but stock zo6 clutch had its hands full dumping at 3500 rpm!
