Well this was the exact type of thread i was looking for. But i have a 99 ls1 corvette with Long tubes, no cats, borla stinger cat backs, Halltech stinger intake and air bridge. When i got the car it has a bbk 80mm throttle body on it. My goal is to break 400rwhp
I been looking at these 2 cams
228 232 .588 .575 113
and
228/228 .588/.588 this one is about 40 dollars cheaper and i can pick between 112 degree or 114 degree. What would you pick or recommend on the stock stall?

I cant afford new gears and a stall converter at this time, but i will be adding a LS6 intake and heads i been looking at stock ls6 heads and then someone told me about patriot stage 2 and 3 heads. They are only 1200 complete would i def see better numbers from the patriot heads?

The car is going to be professionally dyno tuned at east coast supercharging. Last question is the car just hit 63k miles. I was going to replace the timing chain, oil pump, underdrive pulley. What else do i need when i swap it out.

Thanks alot for your help

I'm running a small cam and do not regret anything.

Yep, buy the cam that fits the motor and the application.

For me, the Lingenfelter GT2-3 seemed a good pick for my FI motor.

I'll gladly give up a few extreme end ponies for a car that won't be retarded to drive down a strip when just cruising.

hmmm...well i read page one and page 13,... But my opinion is the same as what i've been told for a long long time "Dyno numbers dont mean ****" ...its the track numbers...and how well/fast your car performs and runs. I do personally have a "big" cam,..MS3 (239/242),...shiftin at 6850, (built bottom end though) and a 4000 stall, I also DO drive it on the street often and still get around ~200 miles a tank, professional tune cost me 250$ and was nailed the first time and extremely pleased with it. When it comes down to it,...its all about your SETUP. Build a car, not a motor.

I remember back in the day my Formula with GTP heads SLP headers and T1 cam. The only tune was a MAF and a Hypertech and the car ran a 11.38 @123.13 1.56 60 and put down 418.9 RWHP and 403.7 RWTQ. Then went to a F4 226/226 114ls tuned by Mike Norris went 11.0's all day long and traped in the 125's a few times. I believe it would have went 10's if it would have had the suspension and weight reduction it has now...I would get almost 300 miles to a tank out it to boot from both cams... I had to do it again I would stay with the F4 but the T1 was a great cam. I have seen the T1 with stock heads run in the 11's alot...

And to add to this, many of the "wild" cam customers that come in are disapointed later when they get whuuped at the strip by a mild cam set-up with the right gears/TC/suspension & tires.

We push our $1895 special intentionally offering any cam that the 918's will work with.

Excellent thread John!

i know this is and old thread, but it has ALOT of great information for the new newb's.

maybe JRP can put it in the cam sticky?

so i started with MS4, 226, and back to stock hehe lol.

but the turbo will help a tiny bit

this is a daily car, cant have a john force pit crew follow me for that john force idle when something happens to my valve train

wow, what a great thread

lots of good info, but one thing I'm missing is how a stockish stall comes into play? I don't want to replace the converter in my car (flashes to ~2400 rpm in my heavy car)

How would the tr224 on 112 lsa be for this? I do want power and a nice lope, but am also all about keeping my mpg and ability to drive it all the time.

I'm in between the 224 and 230 right now...

Nice lope and stock converters and mpg are comprimises. Daily driver mpg or Sunday cruise? Stock converter is on the edge from the start, how loose you need to go depends on the cam. An aftermarket converter doesn't have to have a much higher stall or decrease in mpg.

Stock stalls and small cams can work well together mine idles at 730-750 with very little push on the convertor. You don't need a big cam to make power I have seen plenty of small cams make very good power and run quick times at the strip.
My car is nearly 4000 lbs race weight and is knocking on the door of a 11 second pass with stock stall and small cam.

I watched a 3500 lb DD ls1 run 11.4's on the weekend with the same cam as mine in it and small stall then sprayed a 100 shot into it and ran a 10.9.

cheers

DD mpg, but by "good" I mean as long as its not much worse than the 20-22 highway I get now

People keep telling me go 230 or bigger though...

That is a big cam. It will lope get bad gas mileage and need a good stall converter. My .02 is tr224 or smaller with any heads will get you 400rwhp. That’s about all a stocking drivetrain can handle. There are major compromises after that. Changing valve spring often, a good tuner, race trans. Does that mean a 230 isn't drivable? Are headers and cherry bombs daily driver? How about drag tires in the back? What do you consider DD? I want to turn the key and drive to Florida or if all goes wrong I can drive the Z any time in any weather. The old '75 gets 7mpg and doesn't leave the county, 17 years ago in high school I drove it most day.

after a lot of reading i chose a tr224 .564 114. i just got done rounding everything up for the install. should be going in soon. im thinking my 3200 stall should compliment it well.

I was pretty clueless as far as cams went when I started looking around for an H/C setup. looked around and asked a couple of questions here, but eventually just ended up calling TSP and asking them what I needed for what I wanted. They squared me away with a 224r. Well some **** went down and I ended up getting the cam in my sig. Its awesome! Running stock cats and shorties and still 393 at the wheels with a pretty nice looking power curve. The greatest part is how it runs like stock and still gets 30MPG on the highway!
