Default new cam start up????

I finished my cam install tonight, but when I went to start it up for the first time it back fired???? Now the motor will turn over but doesn't seem to have any spark, the only noise that you can hear is the starter turning over the motor. The engine doesn't seem to even try to start. Any help would be great.

do you have your coil pack harness backwards?

just went through this with a car.. the coil pack harness was backard and the sucker backfired like crazy!!

it was a 98.... the coil pack harness is labeled telling you where they go.

check that out. before you dissassemble......... unless your not 99% sure you did it right

I didn't think of the coil pack harness being backwards. do you mean on the wrong side or the plug in being turned around?

i mean the whole harnes is flipped... you can look on the harness itself and see the cyl # it fires on.. it looks like tape and is colored.

98's have a red wire that goes over the intake and to the drivers side ( i think the rest are the same also) after you get the orientation correct.. ie pass side and drivers side.. then look on the harness and #8 goes to #8 cyl ect...

hope you get it worked out..
i stole this picture from another guy to show you the markers i am talking about it is circled in the pic

I don't see how my timing can be off because I checked everything with the timing gear several times and lined it up with the key way, now the rockers could be because I have never done rockers but followed the directions from Vinci. now on the coils I took mine off as one on each side, I'm going to check the coils again and see, any more thoughts would help....Thanks

it sounds like it might be free spinning cause it isn't trying to fire at all, just tried to start again and had three very small back fires. When doing my rockers I felt as though the rockers were getting way tight but I just followed the Directions from Vinci. I have the Cranecams gold roller rockers 1.7, can you help me understand free spinning?? this is a new term and new thing to me...

sounds like you have the rockers adjusted too tight, hanging valves open. the hardest point is finding zero lash. most people go past it and then start the addjusting procedeure. this, in turn, would leave valves open and do what you are describing. go back through and back them all off. then, very slowly, and with little effort, turn the adjusting nuts until they are barely snug. try lifting up on the pushrod side of the rockers to make sure there is no play between them and the pushrod. then, trn the motor over once and repeat. then, a second time, repeat. this will ensure they are at zero lash. now, go through and turn each one 1/4 turn. wait about 10 minutes, repeat this 6 more times, for a total of seven 1/4 turns. on the eight one, you also lock the jam nut into place by turning both at the same time.
