Default need some help setting my rocker arms (LT1)

I Just put my gtp heads on and now i am putting in the new lifters. They cam with my cam package. I belive they are hydrolic. Here is the problem. When i start to tighten down the rocker arm (with my fingers) the push rod starts to push in on the lifter and the middle part moves in. Is that right?? Also i have to turm the motor and make shure the lifters are not up but down when i tight them. HOW TIGHT DO I GET THEM? Should the rocker arm push down on the spring and compress it when they are tightend. The rocker arms are full roller rocker self aliging. Thanks for the help

Ok so it should be set a zero back lash. But should the center section of the lifter push in while adjusting them. How does adding 1/4 turn help with the power? Thanks for the help!!!

Yeah the lifter should compress a little. This is known as lifter preload. Another method to adjust them is bring #1 cylinder to top dead center. (both valves closed)

Then as stated earlier rotate the push rod with your fingers while you tighten the rocker arm until you feel a slight drag on it.(zero lash) Then turn it 1/4 turn to preload the lifter.

Do this for the #1 intake and exhaust then do the intakes on #2,5,7. And exhausts on #3,4,8. Then turn the crankshaft 360' (one full turn) and adjust the intakes on #3,4,6,8. and the exhausts on #2,5,6,7.

On the LS1 it's nearly the same except instead of 1/4 turn it's 22ft.lbs.

here is the way : you will need a person to help you, he should turn the engine by cranking it several times using the key ( but not to let it run ), you will see the valves moving ( of course the valve covers are off ) pick a cylinder :

1- when you see the intake valve just starts to close adjust exhuast valve.

2- when you see the exhaust valve just starts to open adjust intake valve.

then move to next cylinder until you finish the whole cylinders.

how to adjust valve? you want to maintain zero valve lash ( hydrolic cams) this is accomplished by losening the rocker nut of the valve you want to adjust until the pushrod is rotating free by your fingers then tighten the nut again until the pushrod just stops rotating by your soft grapping fingers, now this is zero lash, then tighten the nut another 1/4 to 1/2 turn ( i prefer 1/4 turn for power) and lock the nut by tightening the lock ( lock is the hex hole in the nut) by proper allen key first and hard then the nut and the lock toghether hard so that it will not get loose later. that's it.

i guess this applies to the LS1 motor as well .
