Default My oil pump died

Started my car, check gauges light was on, oil pressure gauge was at about 20 at idle then jump to 50 with more RPMs. Next morning started car no oil pressure so I turned the car off. I think my oil pump died because I heard a lot of noise in the engine. I would like to change this myself, dealer wants $309 just for labor $92 for the pump <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> . Is it something I can do? Any instructions on how to do this? and should I replace with a stock oil pump? Thanks

Wow thanks for the quick reply. That looks like a very good write up. I have heard about going with a ported LS6 oil pump is this only if other engine work(mods) has been done? Thanks
