Good question.
Some blame it on the fast ramp rates of these aftermarket cams. Some blame it on heavier valve springs with there higher seat pressure. Some blame it on a combo of both the cam and the springs.
While some say they have quiet valvetrains after a cam install and the next guy will tell you his LS1 sounds like a sewing machine.
I don't think anyone here really knows for certain..

This is almost akin to the oil use problem some experience after either a cam or a header change.
One guy has no problems following a cam change, and the next guy claims the car smokes like chimney and eats oil like an industrial furnace [immediatly] following his cam change.
Again, another case where there is no real answer.
Maybe someday, some real bright person will figure this out, and not just give probable causes or posibilities.

I've tried varying my preload all over the place, but the bottom line was, steep ramped cams were always louder than some of the less steep cams. My old 230/230 .566/.566 was quiet, my B1 was quiet, when I went to the XE lobes or the TR lobes, both of those engines got really noisy. Its just part of the game.

jmX.....
I got to agree with you 100% .... but, we have all heard the stories of basically the same cam being used be different people, and ones noisey, while the next guy claims his is quiet (so he claims).
Beats the hell out of me....
So, do you think my little TR-220 with .553" lift is going to be quiet? Sure hope so.
Ron, (still in Korea)

Another thing...
My old 89 Turbo Trans Am (TTA) got a noisy valvetrain after a cam change, but the Turbo Buick engines have flat tappet hyd. lifters.
I always thought roller hydraulics were not as prone to valvetrain noise as a standard flat tappet hyd lifter due to there design. They can follow the cam profile better.
