The minimum gap is figured by mutliplying the bore size x .004". Example 4.00" bore x .004" = .016" min. end gap on top ring. I believe the 2nd ring is factored with a .003" multiplier.

This is the "rule of thumb", however I the LS1 is a usually setup a litle different that that. I just set my top ring to .020" and the bottom larger to .026". This was for a 4.080" bore. The larger bottom gap helps control ring flutter at high rpms, especially with these thinner designed rings.

If i set the top- .018, and the second ring- .022 it will give me good power ?

I want the best compression... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I recently took a 01 LS1 engine apart that had 12000 miles on it. Just for grins, I checked the end gap on the top ring in one of the cylinders and it was .010. Seems tight but who knows what Chevy sets them at from the factory. Jimmy

I would suggest using the sae recommendations as outlined by 9D9LS. You may find that a set of stock aftermarket rings 'off the shelf' will have the gaps set to large and obviously you can't reduce them any tighter. If you want the best option then maybe go and buy 'file fits'. Then you can be sure of getting the gaps set nearer the minimum recommended settings.

GM reccomends .009" to .0019" for top ring and .017" to .030" for second when replacing stock rings on a used motor. My take on these specs is since pistons are hypereutectic then upper ring gap should be large, but since block and heads are aluminum this must bring specs back down to compensate for heat transfer. On second ring GM must agree with theory of large gap keeping pressure from being trapped between upper and lower rings and causing flutter. Thats only logical reason spec of .029" would be suggested.
I would stick with tight tolerance on upper and close to max on second, but before i ran .009" on upper i would inspect old upper ring for butting on ends(shiny finish) and check its gap about .500" down in bore. Also this inspection assumes you had mods done to original motor. Meaning extra heat from cam swap, raised rev limiter, head work and or compression increase.Stock motor will tolerate tighter gaps than motor with all these mods.

If you read what i replied it tells you what to do to know min. safe gaps. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
