Default TR224 plus STOCK stall?

i'm about to go ahead and grab a TR224 and was wondering if it would be drivable with the stock stall for about 3 months or less. and drivable i mean were i can actually come to a stop light and not have to stand on the brakes to keep the car pushing forward like the MS4 dose. i'd grab the Vig 3600 stall off of speedinc for the size of the cam and the bonus of having the anti balloon plate for the 150 shot. (stock gear's for the time, dont really want to move up in gears at this time...maybe next year with a new rear end completly, i know it wont do as great as with gear's but it'll get me by for the time being) anyways thanks for ya'lls help

As long as you have the tune adjusted to increase airflow and raise idle speed, you should be fine on the stock converter. The TR 224 is one of the few cams that's forgiving with the stock torque converter.

I agree. I DD'd mine with the stock stall for a year, given it did take more pressure to hold the car at a stop it wasn't too bad.

I have had the TR 224 cam and patriot heads for 2 years now. I drove it for about 8 months on the stock stall and just made minor changes on the tune to keep it idling until I had a dyno tune.

The cam is a great daily driver cam and does not need a stall. I had absolutely 0 issues with driving on the stock stall. This cam tunes great and drives almost like stock if you have a good tuner.

I am swapping my cam out in a few weeks...ordered a custom cam (thanks Patrick G) and AFR heads. If you want a used cam I will sell you mine . I will have to make sure it is in good condition first and would take pictures for you if you are interested. It is a hydraulic cam and they don't usually show wear unless there is some type of failure. I have only driven 8000miles since the swap...I don't drive my car much even though it is my DD.

Are there any other cams out there maybe a little bigger that you could keep a stock stall. I will do a stall later but want a cam now. Maybe like TR230/224-111 or TR224/227-114.

I'd say probably not, since you also have 2.73 gears. I'd recommend a 3.42 or 3.73 gear and a stall, then get the cam that you really want.

I have a 3.42 rear end from a friend if I want it or need it so I am trying to find the best cam for me. would like to run stock stall for a little while. I know I should probably do a stall first but I kinda want a cam.

it's not that it bother's me, it's just very unsafe. the car feels like i'm power braking it at every stop light and sometime's the brakes are so stiff that i have to stand on the brakes to come to a stop at times

BTW, whether you buy mine or not I just want it clear that the only reason I put in the stall was because a found a used Yank 3200 SS for cheap...otherwise I would have had no problem leaving the stocker in there.

update guys:

i installed the cam and got to drive it around alittle before the tornado siren's started yelling (stupid tornado getting in my way) and i drove it on the stock stall and noticed it WAS DRIVABLE but not comfterable. meaning it sometimes get's really low on rpm's and then recovers then it did push threw my brakes ONCE, just once. anyways i think i'm able to drive it stock like for a month or so till i get the stall. anyways just wanted to report on it

thanks!

Have you put a tune on it yet? That could be your idle problem.

nope not yet, got a appointment in two weeks to get a real tune on it. i was playing with the tune though on the HPT's just to get it to drive right, my only problem rightnow is that it is hard to turn on, like i have to give it alittle throttle to stay alive, but after it warms up it idle great at 750 rpm's. i took it yesterday for a WOT and noticed it needed more fuel now, so yeeah not going to drive it hard until i get the tune. but right now i can drive it now without it going crazy atlights... it just dosnt sound bad *** like the ms4 did owell lol

I had a 224/228 .581 .588 113+4 in my car for a few months with stock stall & gears (2.73). The car was tuned but it still could not stop for **** & would idle to 70mph without touching the gas. It was a nightmare so I uninstalled it due to lack of funds for a tranny build. This winter I had my tranny fully overhauled w/ a custom built 2800-3200 stall & plan on doing the Edelbrock/Ligenfelter CNC heads w/ my cam again soon.
