Install cost

Install cost
Is 1600 dollars a fair price for a cam install? Price includes cam, valve springs, push rods, and installation. Also, when doing a cam is it also a good idea to do a ported throttle body?

Re: Install cost
Yea I agree. The cam kit will run you around $600, maybe a little more depending on which valve train components you chose. That leaves $1000 for labor. At $50 an hour thats 20 hours. Way too long for just a cam install. Unless that includes dyno tuning, then it wouldnt be all that bad. Cam installs generally run around $350-500 depending on where you go and how much they charge an hour. Thats for an fbody though. Not sure if the vettes are any different.

Some shops that have never done an LS1 install will jack the price up because they have no idea what they are getting into. Two shops here in North Carolina want $900 to $1000 for a cam install.
One charges $900+ because the shop has no idea how to keep the lifters from falling, so they also charge an extra $500 or so to everyone, just in case they might have to pull the heads. Same shop argued the LS1 has a 4.0 inch bore and 3.48 inch stroke and that I didn't know what I was talking about and I had the LS1 confused with the LT5, when I corrected them and said the bore was ~3.9 and the stroker was ~3.62. I would never go to this shop for any LS1 work because they are clueless about LS1's
Another shop charges $900 to drop the engine for ALL engine work. Shop doesn't do any engine work with the engine in the car Need springs $900 to drop the engine plus spring install labor. I would never to this shop for LS1 engine work because they are too high on the labor for my budget
In other words, besure you know about the shop BEFORE you have any work done, or you'll end up paying the price for a heads and cam install for just a cam.
BTW: Mikey's prices are very fair to the customer and he has an excellent rep for doing quality work.
