Default Looking into stroker kits

Hey guys, sorry if this has already been hashed out here, but hey, I'm new. I'm looking into the stroker thing and was wondering how a 382 stroker kit would run with my current setup plus the intake/exhaust from my future mods section. What do yall think? Thanks in advance.

You would probably want a bigger cam if you had a stroker. I forgot to see if you had an LS6 intake but you'd also want one of those.

Are you planning on installing the stroker kit yourself or professionally? I ask because it isn't exactly a kit like a nitrous kit is. It usually requires the cylinders to be honed as well as some additional machine work to the block, and the reciprocating assembly will have to be balanced. Then you can actually install the new crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings, etc.

I do have an LS6 intake. What do you mean by bigger cam? Are you talking about larger LSA or those other specs that I don't understand? And this work would be done by an LS1 shop near where I am moving to in Arlington, TX. I'm not crazy enough to get into that kind of work myself.

Well how do you like your current cam?

Adding cubic inches, in effect, makes cams less radical. If your current cam is too radical for you, then with the new stroker it would probably be about right. But if you like the idle and powerband that you have now, with the stroker you are going to want a bigger cam.

I would probably look into a reverse split duration cam. Longer duration on the intake side than the exhaust, since the stroker will have a long steady intake pulse. There are some 346 ci guys running 230/227 or similar cams with thier M6s, so 235/232 or something may be a good choice. Actually, I probably wouldnt' go too much over 235 duration, maybe only 233 or 234 and 229 or 230 on the exhaust duration. A lot of the 422ci engines are running 240 duration cams so you dont want to go that big.

You could always keep the cam you have, and it would be very streetable that way. But if you're looking to maximize your combo then you will want a bigger cam.

That helps a lot. My can isn't near radical enough. I want something to go with this stroker kit that has a nasty, rough idle without sacrificing power. I was thinking along the lines of something with a 110 LSA. I think that from what you're saying, a 110 in a stroker would idle like a 112 in a non-stroker. What do you think? And I would definately need to raise the duration?

Wow... Nice setup Ruf SS. That looks like what I want to do. How much did that Lunati kit run you? What all does it come with? How much was installation? How long does the install take? How hard does it idle? Sorr or all the question, but I want to kow EXACTLY what I'm getting into before I get started. Thanks.

Ryan

I got the kit form Thunder Racing for about $3600. I think Summit has it for $3500 but I am not sure. And it comes will all what you need to put your engine together (Crank, Pistons, Connecting Rods with ARP bolts, bearing, etc.). I installed it at my friend’s shop and paid $1800 for all. It should not take a long time to do the install, but you will need to bore the block a small bit for the new pistons. I think the stock bore size it something like 3.86 and you will bore the block to 3.9.

The idle is very good. I have no cats, FLP LT, Hooker Cat-Back, and the idle very good and never had any problems at all. In fact, it drives just like a stocker does, but a bit louder, I guess the extra sound is coming from the !cats.

I am running a bit rich at the moment 11.8. So, there is a bit more HP in there. Also, my heads are not the greatest, they flow 290 CFM @ .600. So, if you have better heads than I have you will make about 10 rwhp than I do!!!

Hope this helps!

The prices on the Lunati stroker kits are coming down in price. If you shop around you will find one for about 3200. Ruf ss the stock bore is 3.998 and the lunati kit is 3.903so you will need to get the block bored the stroker kit is already balanced and it should be for 3200 bucks

Okay so really, all that leaves is the question of difficulty of work. I'm kinda scared of doing this mysef. I really don't think this is something I want to get into. I had a hard enough time getting heads/cam in. I'm thinking that I want to pay a profesiona to do this. This is still a little way down the road. I'n still going do do the new headers, ported TB, MAF, etc before I get into the stoker kit, but it is coming soon. Thanks for all the help guys. I really apreciate it. I think I've got my game plan worked out.
