Default proper engine break in procedure

I'm getting ready to drop a new GM crate LS6 into my SS. I did a search on the proper break in technique but couldn't find anything. Anyone have any pointers for proper engine break in?

Thanks in advance

Tim

I've always went easy on mine for the 1st 500 miles but I've read a few articles saying to get the most horsepower out of your engine do a few wide open throttle runs the within the first 20 miles. Who knows?

Its easy for 500 miles then a few nice WOT throttles off and on to break in the motor completly during the whole RPM band

Engine break in seems to be a voodoo art. Everybody has a different opinion.

I personally believe that the rings should be seated within the first 20 miles by doing some hard throttle runs. I don't necessarily run the engine to redline, but get on it enough to build the cylinder pressure necessary to push the rings out against the bore.

One thing that seems to be a pretty standard belief is to not break an engine in on synthetic.

I fully agree. I've broken in a total of 4 performance V8's now all the same way. Find some road with up and down grades as these are best to break in the engine. Very the rpms from 2500-5000rpms up the hills and downshift and allow the engine hold you back coming down the other side. After about a half hour the rings are good to go. I then change the oil and your set to enjoy. I've never had a problem with oil consumption or engine related problems this way.

Marine V8 engines are fired up and checked for leaks, and ran to get the oil hot and broken in at various rpms for 20 mins. Oil is changed and motor is brought back to op temp and then taken to WOT on the engine dyno.

Don't break it in WOT all the time but don't be afraid to get on the gas. The 500 mile break in theory for a new car is mainly the drivetrain. With these modern plasmamoly rings they break in quick after about 20 mins.

I did the varying rpm deal for a 1/2 hour ( up to 5K ) in 3rd and 4th then beat the snot out of it for 15 minutes. Hasn't leaked a drop of oil since.
