it's called a locator. it keeps the valve spring from digging into the head, and is used for installed height purposes and keep the spring uniform as well.

Why would you think it is unneccesary? Every head has those. If it didn't, the spring would dig in and through the aluminum. Some applications also have shims to get the correct install height.

i was unsure. i was told that the ls7 springs would be a direct swap over on a ls1 car and with out rockers it would be pushing down on the retainer not on the valve.

any ideas why?

Are you sayin that with the rockers on the tip of the rocker is hitting the retainer? If so then for some reason the valve is too long or it's setting up in the seat too far. The spring itself should have nothing to do with the position of the valve.

Your rocker arms are most likely going to hit the retainer. The tip of the valve is sitting low compared to the retainer. Mock it up before you install the heads. If you got it apart, try using your stock retainers and locks to see how they sit.

The locator which I think the way you are showing it. Is under the factory style seal. They are most likely using it as a shim to correct the installed height. The locator is hardened so the spring can ride on it and not chew through it.

Or if you want to give me a call or shoot me a pm your not that far from us.

Thank you,
Craig

Also known as a valve spring seat... It is certainly required. I mean, they were on the stock valve springs, wern't they?

i understand there is no need for many people responding to thus saying the same thing. im just wondering if anyone can tell off the top of their head why the valve is sitting under the top of the retainer.

are these what stock locks and retainers should look like?

could either of these be the problem?
