Default What cam to run?

I have searched threads high and low, and found many opinions. Imagine that, how about one on my exact set-up and desire. 2001 WS6/A4 with 55,000 miles, Trans go shift kit(4l60E), 3200 vigilante, K&N FIPK & slp bellows, slp 90mm MAF, MTI 75mm ported TB, TB bypass, SLP LT's, SLP Y pipe, Borla Cat Back, power cut outs, bbk trans cooler, slp springs(LS6), retainers & guides, motive 3.42, mickey 315 ET's, random tech tourque arm, slp trainling arms/pan hard, sub frames, strut brace, 7.5 TA stud girdle, MTI custom tune.

I have plans to install a underive pulley with the cam. I would like atleast 400rwhp. Its not exactly a daily driver but don't want it stumbling all over the place. I don't mind the sound, actually like that part, just want something with decent drivability but still go's like a you know what, when I want it too!

tsp torquer V2

or the Futral f14

both will idle fine with a proper tune....and should come damn close to 400rwhp on a stalled auto

Those are good choices. But really, try and find someone locally that has a cam that way you can see how the car behaves, and then decide how big to go. Its hard to explain the characteristics of a cam when its so subjective.

I think I am leaning towards the TSP torquer 2, its seems about the highest with stock heads for driveabilty issues with a great power curve. I was initally thinking of saving money for a procharger D-1SC, but after hearing a good cam and heads package will run you close to the same results for half the cash. What set of heads would be good with the TSP tourquer 2?

Its hard to find a set of heads that wouldnt give good results with the T2. What kind of budget? What compression are your comfortable runing? 93 or better octane?

The best band for the buck will probably be a set of stock valved LS6 heads milled .010 or .015. This will give you 10.75 - 10.85 static compression, and should just make it in terms of piston to valve clearance. There are stronger options out there, but they'll cost you.

exactly...budget is a HUGE part of the equation when asking "what heads?"

another budget head would be the Dart 205s....they'll keep your low/mid range power with the smaller runners.

higher budget....AFR 205s or some TFS 215s

but realize with heads you'll most likely need new injectors, and the TFS require new rockers (so i've heard).

it all adds up....not just the cost of the heads.

I don't have unlimited funds by no means, either going to do one way or another. Because if you are going to do it, you might as do it riqht! Not? I am either going to get all I can with a cam and have some decent drivabiilty or get some good heads and even a nastier cam to compliment them? If I have to do this and do that to get the most out of all of the whole combo... fine! I don't care if I have to call the bank to get great numbers as long as its worth it and I am kickin some but! If it is going to cost a siginificant dollar I am going to say the hell with it and save up for my initial plan of an ATI system. I only decided to go with the h/c because if done right it can achieve almost the same results for almost half the price. Just trying to find that happy medium is the challenge. Would be great if I could do that without out purchasing all the extras like the fuel mods, machining, etc. In my A4 putting down close to 400rwhp cam only, don't care about the costs as long as decent drivabilty with a tune or 450rwhp heads and cam, don't care about the drivabilty as long as the costs are feasable in relation to an ATI. Then we are golden!

Well if you go into the Dyno section, There is a guy making like 400rwhp with a 228 228 cam, the TSP 228R. might want to check it out and he has an A4 too.

Checked it out, thats impressive but I don't think that those gains are typical? I really think it all boils down to a good tune!

Just when I think I have decided on a cam, I get thinking again. I know if I go cam only I will get the tr230/224 or X1. I would really like a nice set of heads, TSP 2.5's for decent price matched with either above I think would also do great but seems most people say you benifit more going with a traditional split if you upgrade you heads too. In which I would run the touquer 2, but the other debate always falls back to the X1 and TEA's 1.5 combo or similar getting great results. Frustrating!!!!!
